I've finally managed to start writing on a fantasy that I've thought of for a while... This is a possible map for the story.I have not made up many names yet for the landscape and my skills in gimp are still bad (hate layers) so it's hard to add names to the map in any constructive way.
Anyways, hope you like it.

Really, really cool :] re: scale, I'd say something this size should be around 1:500,000 - so, roughly 3cm on the map would equal roughly 13km, does that sound about right?

I'm putting it at roughly the same size as europe. It will probably take a while before I can find a scale I'm fine with (I don't like to change stuff all the time).

Looks good so far. Maybe some streets look a little bit too straight.

Thanks. The land is pretty flat (except near the mountains) so I thought the roads should be "quite straight". Also, had I made them go around like a gang of drunktards, the map would just be too cluttered.

Well, that explains the straightness. You could add a scale in miles or kilometers to get a feeling for the size. You could also try to add a darker green for forest or a light yellow-green for grasslands. Of course, I don't know if this exists on your map, so take it just as a general hint.

I've done that one a map in paint, but I have not come up with a good way to create a forest in gimp yet
And I still don't know the scale of the map. When I looked at several well-known fantasy maps (maps from Robert Jordan, Christopher Paolini etc) they had no scale either o:
