Description I took the cover of .Hack//G.U. vol1 and Re-created it without all the words and stuff. . .

using Photoshop Elements/CS5; burn/dodge/Blur/Paintbrush/Smudge tools only.

You can actually see my progression through photoshop, learning as I went. Kite was done first, using dodge and burn only; one with a trained eye for photoshop can tell. Then I did Atoli, and used primarily dodge and burn, but at that point I discovered the Smudge tool, and began experimenting a bit with that. With Haseo I totally ditched doge/burn and used mostly smudge and blur, and right after I started on his hair I got my tablet. things went uphill from there.

I have received comments that tell me about all that, and I just want to say I know, thank you, but I'm not going to go back and fix it, because I believe this piece shows how I have grown as an artist since I began using photoshop.

FINALLY DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do appreciate your thoughts, and honestly, Haseo is the one i put the most effort into... I won't change the piece, though i know where you're coming from, believe me, i see it. but i also see this piece as an evolution of my techniques. Kite was done first, using doge and burn only (aside from the hair). Atoli was done using the same tactic, and with Haseo i just got a tablet and found the blur tool. I look at it and see an evolution of my expertise with Photoshop, though i do notice the faults. (however if you see it with the lines, it looks horrid...)

That's great then! Improvement is always key! Hopefully you will take these notes with you for future pieces. Goodluck!

indeed i will. you should take a look at my eevee photoshop project that i also deleted the lines on. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

Overall the piece is quite good. As you said it's still a work in progress so there are some aspects of shading and other details I sure you will get to as the piece comes into the final phase. But for what you have so far, it is looking like it's coming along nicely. I would defiantly say to work on the edges and flesh out the lines to help soften and give some detail and perspective to the image. Perhaps blend a second layer of the cleaned lineart over the top to define it a little bit, unless you are going more for a painting type of look, then your doing good. Just make sure to define the edges just a little so you can better tell the flow of the shapes and forms. All in all though, it's looking quite well so far, and I do look forward to seeing it actually finished...

holy shit i did have the critiques active? lol well thank you. i appreciate the feedback, and yes, i am going for the painting-type look. its only the second piece i've ever done where it actually looks ten times better without the lineart. ^^

FinalGatsby In reply to DarkAlchemistNinja [2012-02-10 22:48:49 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, did you do layers for shades and highlights in their own layers? Also, did you use the smudge tools to create the effects of the objects within the picture "curved" or "round"? Thanks ahead of time if I get a reply

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkAlchemistNinja In reply to FinalGatsby [2012-02-10 23:07:15 +0000 UTC]

well, each element (eyes, skin, markings, different parts of the outfits, hair) each had their own layer, but if you were to try to do shades and highlights on different layers its difficult to get them to blend correctly, so they are on the same layer as the base colors. (you want to leave each layer element completely separate from the rest until all the shading and blending is complete).

The smudge tool is very effective, particularly if you use the technique i did, which was to first color it with like, 15 different shades/tints that represent or are similar or complimentary to the area, each part of Haseo's outfit, for instance, uses at least ten shades of brown, grey and red. After you put each of the colors on (it will look horrid, but once you blend it it all comes together);all at once, i didn't smudge each color before i added another, then you use the smudge tool to blend them all together. If it still doesn't look right, then add some of the same tints/shades either darker or lighter than the color of the area to add contrast.

The blur tool combined with using correct color combinations/contrasts is what creates the curved effects.

hope this helped and wasn't too confusing.

Guess I gotta go look up the color wheel if I ever create another colored drawing again (if I understood complimentary correctly). Another thing I'd like to ask, when you said each element had it's own layer, is that everyone's eyes, skin, markings etc. together under the same layer or each individual character in the picture had its eyes, skin, markings etc. under their own layer? Sorry if I'm being bothersome with these questions, recently started using photoshop myself, and would like to learn every way I can ^^.

DarkAlchemistNinja In reply to FinalGatsby [2012-02-10 23:52:39 +0000 UTC]

its no trouble. I like helping others. ^^

Yes, each character's element had its own layer, but i did each character seperately, and then merged all the layers for that character after the character was complete (otherwise you'd have over 100 layers, which can get confusing)

there's //SIGN which is an anime lead in to the first games Saga consisting of //INFECTION, //MUTATION, //OUTBREAK, //QUARANTINE, and the accompanying DVDs that eplain the realworl events. Then there was //Legends of the Twilight, which takes place after //QUARANTINE. Then //GU and //ROOTS. an let's not forget the manga renditions of the first for games and several one shots that take place in the .hack world.
