Description I had just purchased Dragon Ball Vol. 6.
Yes the one with the "Ribon" and "Gokuh" typo on the cover!
This is the second half and conclusion chapters to the Muscle Tower Arc.

Android # 8 was my favorite character at the time. And several years later, he STILL is my favorite Android.
Well, maybe next to #16, I guess?
But that's a no brainer since #16 is an immediate fan favorite the very minute you get a glimpse of his lime green armor and orange mohawk.
So are #14, #15 and Major Metallitron. Again, these are characters you could immediately like based on appearance alone.

But what made #8 memorable was his childlike innocence, tragic backstory and overall personality.  I like how instantaneous his friendship was with Goku. Every page and every panel he was on was simply delightful. It's such a shame that this character's next and last appearance would be during the Majin Buu Saga. This was during the big Genki-Dama (Spirit Bomb) moment.

I wish DBS could explore a bit more of the Android characters as opposed to focusing too much on these darn Saiyajins and God like beings that no one really liked anyways.
I mean there are plenty other races to choose from after all. Why limit yourself to just a chosen few?

Why not Pikkon, who is essentially : Space/Heaven Piccolo?

P.S: I also tried mimicking the subdued colors as used in the earlier Dragon Ball mangas. These were (I could only assume) accomplished by using a combination of screentones and Copic Markers.

Awesome work! I really like the contrast between the colours!
I've been meaning to watch / read dragon ball sometime! I really loved DBZ so i'd love to go back to it.
DBS is too focused on the gods and Goku/Vegeta i think, especially in such a diverse and unique universe. I kinda wish they'd give the rest of the characters some more love. I feel like they're going too far ahead as well, like by having this huge universal tournement so early on in the series. Shouldn't they have saved this for the ending?? maybe it's just me lol

Anyway brilliant work! Keep it up

Thank you! These were sampled from the original manga pages that Toriyama colored himself. These colors were limited to 3-4 hues and were usually limited to warm colors.

Why are your letters getting smaller and smaller but then again I do understand your paranoia towards overly sensitive/butthurt fans.

I seriously recommend the earlier "Kid Goku" episodes. I seriously couldn't recommend this enough! Everything you ever wanted/needed is right there. It has the adventure element that would later be omitted as the series took on a more "Saiyan this and Saiyan that" approach. It has memorable characters like Tao Pai Pai, General Blue, Upa, just to name a few I guess. This was also at a time when tournaments actually meant something and heroes and villains alike got to get their ass kicked in a more believable fashion.Bulma wore different attires. Everything was humor driven and Master Roshi was a lovable sleazebag.

My problem with Super is that it expects you to like or understand the series right away. There were no moments to ease you into the series. Everyone starts off fighting one another without rhyme or reason. And worse of all, most of the characters aren't all that interesting. I really despise the whole "God" aspect and as to how they are trying to shove those concepts down our throats. I mean even movie characters like Bojack or Broly are more convincingly strong characters as opposed to Beerus or that Marshmallow looking thing that is referred to as the Strongest Character in the series. That's bollocks! Beerus was introduced in a sort of gag like manner and Whis is only strong based on stories and hearsays. What a fuck'n waste of time and effort! I seriously hope that it does get better in the future. And hopefully it does offer more interesting characters other than these good for nothing gods. But until then, I'm still quite loyal to the original series.

Awesome to see how much thought you put into it!
Yeah aha i have a habit of changing font sizes :'D My bad!

Sounds great honestly! ^^ I really need to get around to watching it sometime. DBZ doesn't make much sense in the beginning without it to be honest.
It's a bit cardboard for me. Way too much of the saiyans and gods. :/
It's just such a sudden thing. Like "Oh by the way look at all this lore and how the universes work." which is great but couldn't it have waited for a while whilst they explored their universe a bit more maybe? What's the point in introducing all these new characters while your making the old ones irrelevant? I also feel like Goku is way too overpowered. There's not many places they could go from here (Like, above God status.) I don't know :/ I'm rambling haha

Oh my, I'm quite pleased that you appreciated all my efforts.
Nah, it's all good, my friend!

I just thought the font changing was done intentionally due to the topic we were discussing.
Tis true and as much as I hate DBGT, I'd had to give it props for cycling back to an Android (Super 17) as a main villain for the series. Sure, Baby had that weirdass GT look but surely enough, it identified well with the said franchise. It was uniquely it's own.

I agree again!  Even GT had this whole space exploration aspect to it. It actually felt like an RPG game up until the whole Shadow Dragon Saga which I absolutely loathe! Goku should've stayed dead after the Cell Games. That would've been Toriyama's plan to begin with. Keeping Goku alive derails the chances of character development for everyone else. He could still use King Kai like a telephone anyways so why not just go with that, I guess? Gohan wouldn't have grown up to be such a nerd. I mean the build-up was there! All those murdered Cell Jr.s, that's the proverbial passing of the torch so to speak.

Rambling is cool and it's nice to have a healthy conversation with a fellow fan.
I'm seriously thankful for folks like you!

I haven't really seen much of GT but i know a lot of people can't stand it. I agree! You've got to know where to end things. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is probably my favourite anime but it wouldn't be the same if it kept going on and on. Things lose their effect if they drag on too long, that's why i respect stories which kill off their main characters (Properly). If it was going to end that's where it should've, i thought the ending of the Buu arc was pretty bad. Pretty anti-climactic after the cell arc.

Haha i agree! ^^
Aw Thank you! It's nice to talk about fandom things with like-minded people!

Tis true!
I believe the original plan was to end the series as early as the Frieza arc.
This would sound believable since Toriyama really doesn't like working on long titles. Have you seen Neko majin, Sand land, etc. All these other titles that came after both Dr. Slump and DBZ only comprise of 1 or 2 volumes of tankobons.

Toriyama has the attention span of a kid hence he wouldn't have forgotten about Launch during the Saiyan arc.
He was only forced to work for that long by both Torishima and that other editor guy hence everything else after the Frieza arc looks and sounds a bit disconnected with the original DB lore.

Honestly when it comes to manga i prefer shorter series (Unless i'm hooked!) saves my wallet lmao
I was kinda annoyed Launch disappeared, she was supposed to have a thing with tien right?  As much as i love DBZ there are a lot of continuity errors and just generally weird things with it. There is an atmosphere shift between those arcs isn't there? Animation style too, but i suppose that comes with age.

And there's also this one, I guess?
www.dragonballinfinity.com/?p=…

I feel like some directors are trying to emulate the look these characters had in the manga (down to their hatchlines on their necks) while others tend to deliberately ignore the source material and pretty much invent their own desired look along the way.

It's definitely odd. You don't notice as much if you aren't paying close attention, but some changes are pretty drastic. Consistency is definitely an issue, i mean just look at Vegeta in the Saiyan arc compared to the Buu arc. Really odd.
(They could at least have tried to match styles in the anime, some shots look completely different.)

I agree and I've always found it odd as to how extremely pink Son Goku's skin was. I'm not entirely sure if it's just a Planet Namek thing but that's definitely one of my pet peeves in with regard to the anime version.

I guess they've corrected that (colors and filler episodes and all) on DBZKai but I have yet to watch a single version of just that to determine things for myself.

YudaMori In reply to darkchapel666 [2017-02-18 17:50:39 +0000 UTC]

I never really noticed that until you said, it's very pink. Then again Vegeta's colour scheme changed from when he first appeared, right? I know the colours for everyone are a bit off compared to his original vision.

I've never seen it to be honest. I think i caught one episode but it seemed a little bit off to me. Maybe because it was on a kid's channel though :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darkchapel666 In reply to YudaMori [2017-03-04 20:40:59 +0000 UTC]

I guess the color change was intentional since I guess those weird colors were supplied by Toriyama himself. Again, I'll fill this under accidental since quite frankly there aren't any templates to follow when creating your own world and characters. Sometimes you are more often than not limited by the number of your Copics/watercolors hence the resulting colors wouldn't be too appealing at first. But the same couldn't be said about anime and animation companies in general. They do have substantial budget for it and everything has to look a certain way to be both appealing/marketable.

I think so too. Despite it being broadcasted on a more edgier and more teen timeslot, Cartoon Network is still Cartoon Network. Anime titles deserve a designated channel altogether.

I have recently saw Resurrection F, it's a nice movie. It's a lot better than the first one (Battle Of The Gods). Try it out, you might like it as well!

I really detest the way anime is censored for western audiences, because most of the time it's unnecessary (Like in the pokemon anime where they changed rice into biscuits??) or when they removed a scene where a character is eating because it was too violent lol.

I actually went to see it in the cinema with my dad last year! It was pretty good, i enjoyed it. It was kind of surreal watching dragon ball in a cinema with other fans.

darkchapel666 In reply to YudaMori [2017-03-13 17:51:35 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, the 4kids approach!
I could understand if the censorship was due to some obscene hand gestures or downright nudity. But this is why we have a ratings board to begin with, to review, classify and eventually recommend shows for it's target demographic.

These laughable edits are usually unnecessary and would usually cost more money and eventually cause inconsistencies with the characters/stories.

I saw in on a bootlegged DVD and the dub was in Spanish. It's funny how every other character is "Senor This" and "Senor That". The banter between Vegeta and Goku was pretty priceless. The fight scenes were quite remarkable. I wish the Frieza henchmen could've been stronger and had more personality but I'm glad every other Z-Fighter got to fight and do something cool up until they were all upstaged by both Goku & Vegeta. Every other scene with Whis and Beerus are wasted frames of animations. The only god beings that I liked were King Kai and King Yemma. And guess what, neither characters are within this movie. Also, that Back To The Future-sque ending!
I wish they have given Vegeta that moment of both revenge and redemption but yeah this is still the motherfucking Son Goku Show hence that rather questionable ending.

It's really strange. I don't know why some people think it's a good idea, i believe shows should be viewed as they were intended :/
Haha that is funny! Yeah, it was nice that everyone got a little bit of airtime for a little while. The ending made me pretty mad though, i thought it was a total waste of an opportunity. It would've been the perfect time for Vegeta but nope, goku gets the kill :/
And the lack of king kai is disturbing, he's such a good character :-D

I think from a network's standpoint, images like those would most likely cause an uproar from conservative parents. But yeah, it really is the parent's duty to supervise what his or her child is watching. That responsibility should definitely befall on the parents. And as cliche as it goes, the more you hide something, the more you unnecessarily hype it up. These are all the more reasons that people would speculate that there MUST be an uncensored version of this elsewhere.

I'm glad Master Roshi got to fight a lot and I'm glad that Krillin is back to his bald self again. I also like how Fieza remembered killing some of the Z-Fighters while deliberately forgetting the fact that Gohan once punched him in the gut which resulted in one of the most lackluster moments from the previous DBZ movies.

I agree, everything was going fine. If they had given Vegeta that moment, the movie could've ended on that note and it was believable and quite satisfying from a fan's POV. Never were they given the more appropriate moment for Vegeta to exact revenge for his race and planet other than the pivotal scene.

I guess the toned shifted upon the introduction of Supreme Kai. But then again, Supreme Kai would be then replaced by Whis & Beerus. All these "God" like beings are looking way too silly even from a gag standpoint. And why is a clown "God Of Destruction", what did he get to do to achieve such recognitions. Is throwing pies and riding tiny bicycles really all that "DESTRUCTIVE"?

Exactly :/
Yeah roshi was awesome! Nice throwback.
It really bothered me, the whole time-travel thing was really unnecessary? They could've taken Beerus and Whis out of the picture and it would've made the same if not more sense. It was literally the perfect moment for Vegeta, and by completely disregarding that it's basically like kicking the fans down the stairs.
It's a shame, i feel like they're putting all their eggs into one basket. There's nothing stronger than a God, so there'll be nothing left for them to surpass soon :/ I'll admit i do like the buu arc, but super just doesn't feel right.
Oh my god haha. Clowns are pretty scary though, with their little bikes :'D Have you seen the mouse god?? That's probably the worst one in my opinion (In terms of silliness) It's something straight out of Tom and Jerry.

They shouldn't have been there in the first place. They did nothing to contribute to the story's growth and all. Sure, the training scene was kinda impressive but the rest of the movie is that of them salivating over earth's food or complimenting the cake they were having. We get it already, earth's food is fuck'n delicious! I think we've already established that ever since the first movie. Every food or eating scene is starting to look like a god damn Toriko episode.

I guess some of the fight scenes were also reminiscent of the Planet Namek battle Goku and Frieza once had. Choreography wise and it's overall color scheme and all. Hell, even the plains they were fighting at had some very distinct Namekian features (Huge rock formations, random spots of grass, large bodies of water that you could fall into, etc.)

I totally agree! Goku should have just passed the torch to Gohan or better yet to Goten. Super had far too many characters that are either too Dragon Quest-ey, Blue Dragon or Tobal-ish. You wouldn't care too much if either one of them (or all of them, for that matter) died in one single swoop.
I sincerely wish they could bring back Pikkon, why were we even teased with this substitue Piccolo if they weren't even gonna use him again? Hopefully it does happen, now that they are sort of introducing movie exclusive concepts (Female Broly) into the mix.

I don't think I would want to see that. I think I've seen one that looks like an elephant, a giant mass of hair and one that resembles Randall from Monsters Inc.. But then again there is also that one god crew that resembles the Backyardigans. It's either Toriyama is experiencing 2nd childhood or Toyotaro is doing a sloppy job with these character designs. These pop culture references were a bit more subtle back in the days (Major Metallitron -The Terminator, Frieza's third form -Xenomorphs from Aliens). And also animal characters does look great as henchmen and foot soldiers (as evidently during the Red Ribbon Saga before) and not as some omnipotent god like beings. I think that concept is far too close to Hinduism, Egyptian deities and early Pagan beliefs that it tends to blur the line between fiction and reality.

I feel like they're setting up so many characters and just not giving them the exposure or time they need to reach their full potential. I am curious about certain aspects of super, but i'm not invested as such.

It's pretty ridiculous. I think the backyardigan thing was a hoax, but it looks convincing!
Yeah. Theres been controversy about it, but i don't think it should be taken so seriously :/ Still a bit uncreative though, in a sense.

And hey, I (unintentionally) saw the Mouse God you were telling me about. It was pretty bad even by DBGT standards.

Of all the 12 Gods Of Destruction :
dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/God_…
Helles, Mosco, Rumoosh, Gene, Arak and Sidra were the ones that I liked.
And I think Iwen was supposed to be a Mr. Popo 2.0 or something.
But then again, their costumes are a bit bland and leaves less to be desired of despite some of the Gods being collaboratively designed with Toriyama himself.

Actually they are pretty varied. I haven't seen them all properly yet. I like a few of their designs, nut you're right about the outfits. I know all the gods are wearing similar outfits to show they're gods, but perhaps it would've been cooler to have their own individual outfits

He does have that cold, souless death stare haha!
Which reminds me, has Mr popo showed up in super yet? Or did they remove him for... obvious reasons? :0

They are starting to look more Yugi-Oh like and the series is losing it's originality and identity because of this. The original series used to have a more Asian feel to it (both in mythology and costume wise).Hell, even Goku's hometown (Mount Paozu) was designed to look like ancient China. And despite not being specifically mentioned in the series, terms and ideologies such as "ki", training with a master, rival, tournament aspect, etc, has it's roots in kung-fu cinemas.

Let's take a minute and appreciate the Saiyan battle armors.
dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Batt…
There was a huge variety on how it was depicted despite it's very basic presentation. Some armors has that skirt like thingie, some have that tanktop feel to it, Cooler's minions has that hybrid looking thing, others vary in color, etc. There were so many ways to tweak it and almost every time they do, it looks fresh and original. It doesn't look like a recycled concept/character.

I don't think so. I don't think even Supreme Kai or Old Kai has made an appearance yet. But then again, I haven't really seen a single episode of DBS hence it would be far too early to confirm that. I think Zamasu is the closest thing we got as a callback to the old Toriyama designs. But then again, he's colored differently and his color combinations are all weird and yucky like.

I'll admit I do love the original YuGiOh manga, but it's a separate thing. It's a shame in a way how much DB has changed, all three series (not counting GT because i haven't seen it lol) feel so different to one another. I do miss the asian influence :/

Agreed!
They could've done that with the god's outfits a little more. I know the clown has multicoloured trousers but that doesn't really cut it.
Some variety would've been nice.

I think i've seen those two in screencaps, so they're in it. I'm not sure how relevant they are though.
I feel like there are so many possibilities in DBS and they're going for the worst ones :/

darkchapel666 In reply to YudaMori [2017-04-02 19:08:30 +0000 UTC]

They really had to step up in with regards to the character designs.
I think that would be a determining factor to charm the old fans back into the series. I'm pretty sure that our fandom isn't in their best interest as of the moment but t'would be best to be pandered to. All the more, now that they are sort of pandering to every Saiyan nerd's favorite character: Broly. Or a concept similar to Broly, I guess.

Toyotaro should've known better. He started working on a fan manga after all. Although I haven't really read any of his earlier works, I'm assuming he was hybriding (pardon the term) all these movie and GT concepts to his work. I clearly remembered seeing Syn Shenron and Pikkon in some of his pages right before he got picked up to work on DBS. Why can't he do just that for DBS? Oh, such are mysteries of life.

As soon as i saw the 'female broly' i was pretty done. It's just so obviously done for like, publicity? I know that sounds weird because of course shows need to draw audiences in - but it feels like shes only there for people to be like 'WOAH Broly!!11!'
There's just so much lost potential. You've got such an expansive universe but they skip straight past it to show the gods. To me it'd make more sense if this was the climax of the series (Y'know, having every single universe fight for victory?)
I dunno though, i'm no expert. I'm sure they're doing their best :/

We will never know
Hopefully we'll see more of the old cast shine. I mean, they brought back Arale for an episode and 17 is coming back this arc. Who knows.

I totally agree, to feature Gods into the topic would usually meant that the fate of the world is in jeopardy. And their intervention is deemed necessary to save the general public. Even when Kami, King Kai or Supreme Kai was first introduced, something grave had just or is about to happen. Either a character just died or a major threat is on it's way.

Introducing these Gods so casually made it lost their "higher power" status and made them at an equal footing with the mortals.

All this talk only cycles back to my original artwork and suggestion that the series goes back to it's original format and presentation. They've done something very right in Resurection Of F and yet they still managed to botch up the ending by making it the Son Goku show. Son Goku is like the John Cena of the series. At first you liked him and then you grow tired of him because all he knows are the same moves and yet he still wins all the time.

I think that's the issue, you've nailed it. When i look at Beerus i don't see an almighty God of death, i see a cat who likes food a little too much.
When the supreme Kai was introduced there was a reason, where as Beerus just showed up - and because of that intervention different things are happening. This whole tournament (which decides the fate of the universes) was Goku's idea.
Goku seems to be taking all the limelight, but he's also causing all of this conflict. It feels like there's no real purpose behind anything anymore lol.

Mental image of Goku beating someone with a metal chair in a WWE match lol

I remembered it was you who mentioned that there will be no more enemies to fight with after they reach and battle gods and folks from other universe. And what else could they possibly come up with demon beings, perhaps? Which they've already done with their HELL episodes. This is starting to sound like a Christian/Catholic set-up as opposed to it being an actual DBZ storyline.

Goku should've really stayed dead after the whole Cell Saga. That would've made his sacrifice all the more memorable. It's the same case with every other Marvel or DC character that dies and gets revived in some weird plot twist. But if were gonna go with the "should've stayed dead" principle, I think Toriyama could have inadvertently done just that with the likes of Tien, Chaozu, etc. Since they either don't have hair to begin with or simply don't have the Saiyan blood in them. They seem alive but seems dead as well. Most especially in with regard to their participation in the series. I wish there was a character that could actually bypass that notion of not being a Saiyan but still being able to fight/train like one. That would be more interesting than all these new characters with bland or downright boring character designs.

Totally. It just bothers me, Gods are supposed to be almighty beings - and Goku's met the God of everything, so i can't see where it could possibly go from there. Especially since Zeno is omnipotent, like there's literally nothing above him.
I think permanent death is a good thing in a series. Resurrection rarely works well in fiction, especially when it's so obtainable and easily achieved (Collecting the dragon balls is a simple task) Without the fear of death there isn't much left to worry about, theres no stakes. I mean it altered that principal a little bit in DBZ because if you die when you're already dead you cease to exist, so i guess there is an element of permanent death - but still...
i really respect authors that can kill off characters, especially main ones, without chickening out as such. Obviously it has to be done well, but when it is it's super effective!

darkchapel666 In reply to YudaMori [2017-04-07 03:32:26 +0000 UTC]

I agree, collecting the Dragon Balls used to be challenging and part of the show's main objective. The cast usually goes out of their way to find one and would usually be in a life threathening situation upon doing so. Even with the help of a Dragon radar, Goku still had to find these individual pieces and meet new characters along the way. Even with the aid of Kintoun, the journey usually is isn't any easier for him and the gang.

The "no reviving anyone that had once been revived" policy was basically merely spoken of and isn't really being implemented althrough out the series. Shenron knows this and yet agrees to do it anyways. You sill had to pander to a much wider audience. And Goku is an effective way to shoe-horn a casual fan into the DBZ franchise. People expect to see Goku and his orange uniform. That's what they identify the series with. Imagine watching a Scooby-Doo episode withouth the gang, without the villain with a mask or more importantly without Scooby-Doo. It just wouldn't be the same and it immediately distracts you from being more involved/invested with the series.

The rules of the Dragon Balls went out the window a little when Dende became the guardian of the earth lol
Only being able to revive someone once solved the issue a little bit, but as you said the rules of the world in DBZ tend to be fairly lax.

I suppose so, what i said previously works for some series but i can't really see it working for DB because it's always been kinda the same. I just find it interesting when things like that happen though, it wouldn't feel the same but it breaks the routine a little. (I think that's why i adored the Scooby-doo zombie island movie as a kid, because the villains aren't bad guys in masks - they're real!)
I think it's all about balance when looking at these things. Resurrection and crazy nonsensical rules that change when the wind blows kinda suits Dragon Ball, but i couldn't see it working in a series like Full Metal Alchemist. To me Dragon Ball is a little more light than other series, so it doesn't really need to make sense i guess :'D

Yes, Dragon Ball is by far my measuring stick as to how far I should collect mangas for a particular series.
Anything less than 42 volumes is considered to be quite manageable to collect. The only other series I currently possess is Yu Yu Hakusho for it only had 19 volumes worth of tankobon.

And the best reasons to collect the tankobons would be the consistency of the artwork. Since the manga was done solely by Toriyama and not just some random art director/company. I think this image best sums up my criticism about the inconsistencies of the anime.

Tis true and it's the Bad Launch that's in love with Tien. The Good Launch was originally planned to be Muten Roshi's girlfriend/waifu. That's how she was introduced anyways.
