Description
Tribute to Hunter S Thompsonthanks to the dev for the daily deviation, i had no clue about it and logged in after like 2 weeks of not logging in to 700+ messages. I swear i got spammed or something..
1) its not meant to be deep thought out art piece with everything in place. It's just supposed to be fun
2) sorry about the brush credits, I have a huge collection on my drive and had no idea where I got any of them anymore but whoever did em thanks.
3) for those of you who don't "get it" it said San Francisco because it was shot in San Francisco (not las vegas) and for those who dont know who HST is, read a book
EDIT:
Uploaded without any brush or text art so now i don't need to credit anyone but myself

I don' t like it.
1. While the picture may seem like a tribute to Hunter, It is more a tribute to Hunter's character from FAL:Las Vegas, Raoul Duke. Unfortunately, this is a very narrowβalbeit commonβview of this prolific, important writer. Imagery like this drove Hunter nuts.
2. Hunter would have thrown this woman in the hole. If she were to be allowed to emerge, he would have freed her nipples, fucked her and thrown her back. In that respect, the piece Sex, Blood, Politics in darkctyle's gallery is far more reminiscent of Hunter and his complex relationship to women.
3. Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses be damned. One doesn't look like HST by donning them, you just look like a unread sophomoric poser.
4. On the Steadmanβesque style; this lacks the respect for Steadman's masterful line. He doesn't merely scatter ink-splots around an image, there would be finer details in the inkwork. He would have bordered this image and it would never be applied to a photograph.
If we're going to look at HST's work through the lens of FAL:LV, then let's bring it into sharper focus. Never has there been a more appropriate time than in these difficult times for Thompson's tale of excess and the despair. FAL:LV is a snapshot of a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah, who's inhabitants and visitors were still dancing after the music stopped. It was an ode to the loss of the couterculture zeitgeist and changing social attitudes in the morass of a confused America. To sum this work up as simply a drug fueled romp through the high desert of California and Nevada is sadly shallow and misinformed. To the point, it isn't about a party, but rather the empty abyss found behind glitter and excess.
I concede that the composition above may be a reflection of the generally recognized image of Hunter, but if you are truly a fan, you should do your best to correct this simplistic, disrespectful and ultimately incorrect portrayal. His legacy deserves better than this cartoon character.

While I dig what you are saying, I must disagree with you on some points. The first being, well, the first.
After Derby, and especially after Vegas, Thompson became more and more the character of Duke. Sure, he was not Duke in Derby, but he was formulating what he would become. In the books The Kitchen Readings, Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S.Thompson and The Joke's Over, they spoke extensively on this. Sure, Thompson hated Uncle Duke, but he did nothing in way of convincing people he was anything but the character.
Another thing I disagree with is your saying that Steadman would never do that on a photograph. In Curse of Lono, he altered a picture of Captain Cook, and he is known to alter photos quite often. Also, you can find on his website a series of photos called Intimate Art( check out the piece Growing Fear.) Another example for you: [link]
As for everything else you said, right fucking on. Especially about LV being poignant today. It's a shame the bastard had to give up the ghost, as we need him more than ever.

You summed up pretty much everything I found wrong with it.
It's certainly a nice photograph, but to slap some Steadman-esque words on top of it and say it's a tribute to Hunter is a sham.

Congratulations on the DD, I think its well deserved.
Anyhow, I think the photo is impressive, the colors are smooth, the composition is great. So IMHO you needn't have added the text and the splatters, the point gets across well without them. Great shot, either way.

It may sound silly.... but it looks posed, not natural, not captured, not fluid. Neither angry nor sad. Emotionless. There is no trail in the sand from the typewriter. The photo has no life to hurt, to kill. Maybe that was the point. I dunno.

Milgaviel, you may not know much about hunter s. Thompson, but the fact that its posed, not natural, not captured, seems to me like it is all part of what Thompson did, what his writing seemed to be all about, i think its a pretty sweet image.

I think it's kind of ironic that you said that considering the fact that Thompson was a Gonzo journalist...

obviologist In reply to cariosus-abortum [2009-02-04 06:42:07 +0000 UTC]
its only ironic if you don't understand Gonzo journalism, the whole point is that Thompson would embellish the truth of what happened substantially, he would put things in his articles that never happened, and purposely pose the subjects in a way that was not entirely true so as to make the story more interesting. and you say he "was a Gonzo journalist" as if that was some style he learned in school and employed in his work, the fact is that he WAS gonzo journalism, it was his convention and himself. it wasn't something he did it was who he was.

You make a good point, but I think what I found ironic was the fact that even though there is some fictional elements to gonzo journalism, it's only used to emphasize the point and does have realistic potential. Having something look completely staged would typically inhibit someone from taking it seriously which would make the story itself somewhat pointless.

point well put, I cant argue with that. though i wonder if the elements in this image still work as a tribute to thompson himself if not his journalism per say.

That's a good point. Many people don't see past the Fear and Loathing aspect though so it's hard to say. I do believe that this shouldn't be considered a tribute to Thompson himself. It should be a tribute to the media's representation of him.

Hahah! Fecking love...I really like the references you've put together here, and the shot is superb. Nicely staged and lit, with a good feeling of energy and character.
From an illustration standpoint, I think the black splatters could be just a little more considered in order to complement the photo; while the type feels spot-on, they need just a LITTLE tweaking in order to achieve the same level of cohesiveness.
That said, I do think you've managed to approximate Steadman's singular style rather well; nicely done!
