Use lots of darker shades, and make sure to improve your knowledge about face proportions
The hair is very good, you don't have to improve any more in that area

It's often enough if you just use pressure, but as you think.
I see it in more of your drawings not just this one that you leave a very bug space between the eye and the nose which gives this odd effect, like the eye is too small...watch out for the shades between the nose and eyes
