I hit a small roadblock when I was writing, so I did what I normally do. Practice my anatomy and poses, especially the damned hands and feet. I need so much more practice with hands and feet. They are my curse!!!.Not marking this as mature since it's A) non sexual and B) You can't see anything.
Do you ever think that Cell stopped and thought about things?
He is very vain, sadistic and a narcissist. Geros' computer programmed his personality so that he wouldn't have compassion and remorse, in order for him to become the ultimate killing machine.
Do you think Cell ever just stopped and considered this? Is he a victim of his own programming? As a biological creature with a supreme intelligence, could he overcome this if he wanted to? Would he want to? His own personality would dictate that he would always have to be in control, but if he was programmed to be the way he is, has he ever been in control? Wouldn't this conflict with his own nature?

What an interesting question, indeed... Well, he HAS a personnality, some desires, a goal, etc... So, without going to the romantic/nice/yada yada side, for that, I truly think he could overcome this. After all, everyone is master of its destiny !

I don't think his personality was really programmed into him like one would program a robot. After all he is a biological, sentient being, and unless he was under some strange form of mind control, would have free will just as everyone else. If he was a true 'android', he could be programmed, but putting someone's entire personality into their DNA... I've always been of the camp of nurture over nature, so I'd say ultimately his personality was only loosely shaped based on whatever Dr. Gero's worldview was that he threw into the computer. Cell, being the smart dude he is, could easily distinguish between reality and Dr. Gero's biases once he ventured out into the world.
You can see it starting to happen once he reaches his perfect form. Dr. Gero wanted revenge on Goku. Cell said he was no longer interested in that, and only wants to push his power to the limits to discover his true potential. He sees fighting Goku as a way to test that, rather than as an act of revenge. I'd bet that if Goku hadn't been the strongest fighter, Cell would've treated him like he did the other z fighters and focused his efforts on whoever was. He'd already deviated from his original conditioning.
Ha now I'm babbling.
I guess in the end it comes down to the big unanswerable philosophical questions. He'd sit there contemplating about nature vs nurture and whether or not free will is an illusion... he'd go nuts trying to figure it out haha

I totally get what your saying and I tend to agree. I was having a debate with a lovely woman on fanfiction.net who was quite convinced that he was programmed which is why certain aspects of character are never revealed. But rather than simply not being there, she said they were supressed, meaning if something was to happen, like, he got knocked on the head (goku) it could undo the suppression and bring about a whole new side of Cell.
And you can never babble when you talk about his supreme perfection.

I don't think those parts of his character were really suppressed, more like he never got a chance to explore them. His mind seemed to evolve along with his body, so once he hit perfect form and his mind was refined enough for him to contemplate on those kinds of thoughts... he unfortunately only got to live for ten days. Definitely not enough time for anyone to figure themselves out. So I don't think it would take a knock on the head, just longer than a week and a half of introspection. Maybe years? He'd never really turn "good", but I could see him easily going from a lawful evil alignment to a reluctant lawful neutral over the years.
But the idea of him getting knocked over the head Goku-style and wandering around thinking he was some good guy... haha wow "Why does everyone run away screaming when I come near them?! Am I just really ugly?! I'M SO CONFUSED." That would make for a hilarious fanfic ;D

I like contemplative, introspective Cell. I think he's probably the most intelligent DBZ character, and one of the most interesting. I don't say that just because I like him; I can admit that of all the cast Vegeta is probably the most interesting, seeing as he's dynamic and we actually get a lot of backstory on why he is the way he is. I wish they'd gotten more into this aspect of Cell, but I know we couldn't have that. You're not supposed to like the bad guys or feel sympathy for them cuz they're baaaad!

I really do like Cell and his personality. His adaptability is probably the best aspect about him and I wish they hadn't killed him off. And then he became just another patsy in Hell. He could have been so very much more. It's like digging up your backyard, finding a giant gold nugget and putting it on your mantle piece rather than actually doing anything with it. (True story from Aus.) It's a shame and a waste! A waste!!!
