"Kid. No."* * * * *
Finally uploading this after a week of having it sitting there. Originally drawn for the ATG 'acting' theme, was holding onto it on the off chance that I might finish it up, correcting some mistakes (Tide's size and pose mainly), adding some details (to a lot of the mid-distance void space, plus adding some background ponies) then colouring.
Been too off-balance though, so heres just the sketch version, a pic dedicated to Steadfast'. Also my apologies for the quiet time.
See, drawing this, something kinda clicked with me about Cordance. I sorta realised how I could make the city a bit more tangible, like an actual place. Up till now I've really just done rather disconnected drawings. I don't even know 100% where the royal gardens in LB: Cordia are.
Then I kinda realised something more. Take a look; [link]
The first ever drawing of Cordia wasn't an illustration or anything, it was a map. That's Cordia right there, not well developed, but plain and easy to see. Thanks to the map I was able to plan the Day 25 scene, and the large mountain to the side was eventually able to become a plot-related landmark. (or will eventually, I should say)
So that's the key, landmark locations that can be viewed in relation to one another, and maps to tie everything together. Cordance needs a city-map, and a whole bunch of deliberate, recognisable locations to fill all the spaces.
And yaaah, not gonna be easy or anything, especially since even what's already been drawn has been designed minimally. I've drawn the bridge ascent on one side, but not the bridge, nor the town or dock around the ascent, or the other end of the bridge. Seen the sun dome but not up close and not really revealing the main port. Etc.
Plus, I don't know how to draw cities or towns, not really. You can see what I can do is very basic. And I gotta think about how best to develop the characters too, just drawing them isn't really enough, they need to have dialogues and stuff, stories.
Kinda overwhelming! It's like making the move from Dasky 1 to Dasky 3 all over again. Fun fact though; in the Dasky 3 soft-setting setup section I pretty much planned to indicate that the start of setting up the game would be in designing the main city/town first. For some reason I didn't think that could translate over to Cordia.
Sorry for the text wall, I'm a bit excited, even if nothing is really getting done.
Oh yeah, final note. Didn't dA have a journal feature thing specifically on the topic of maps, sorta around the time of the NATG? In hindsight I guess they made a pretty good point. Took me a while to connect the dots.

Tide is a very energetic filly, it seems, which Steadfast seems rather exasperated with. Which does make sense; I'd imagine that a pony with a name like 'Steadfast Glory' would be a character that acts in a very deliberate manner, and thus would have issues with those who bound from one think to the next. Not unlike Applejack and Rainbow Dash, respectively.
It's very interesting to see how the pictures are interconnected like that. It also allowed me to realize a couple of mistakes I've been making: I had been thinking Cordia was the name of the city, and that the city is a coastal port. But the city's actually named Cordance (Cordia being the country), and it sits inland next to a river and/or lake.
For creating the map, an important thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to map out everything at once. Leaving sections of the map blank will reduce the workload (and the stress it can cause), and leave room for future inspiration.

Huh, it all makes more sense with the map! It's a good idea to connect different parts of the city.
If you think you don't know how to draw buildings properly, that's what is creating art all about - a practice! I'm sure you'll develop it very quickly.
I'm happy you're going to colour it, because it's really good. I like those ponies' poses and their reactions to each other. Huh, I really really like it! The background is great and pretty detailed - not everybody can create it that detailed. When I look at this drawing, it's somehow so clean and everything is so perfect!
