Description
This is part of an illustration job I did for Deviantart itself a while back, which unfortunately fell through when the Deviant Clothing range got closed down this year.I recoloured it today, now work for The Agents is starting to wind down, and it looks much better than it did with the limited colour palette we had to use for it to be printed on t-shirts.
It's interesting to note that as an illustrator, the 2 main things that people will always ask me to do is a comic, and a t-shirt (never really a single illustration), so for all you up and coming illustrators out there, its worth remembering about context. Context is important, as no matter how good you are, you have to think about how the illustration is going to be used.
I think its part of the reason that it got shut-down, because even though the artists they got for the project were probably really good, at no point in the art direction was there a mention on how it would be used on a t-shirt or whatever bit of clothing they had in mind, so, for me anyway, as much as I liked the pieces, I couldn't see how they would work on a shirt, and I definitely wouldn't wear it myself. And they wanted a mish-mash of stuff I had already done before, rather than fresher ideas, so again, my old work was done for print (typically A3 or bigger prints), not for clothing. Like Comics, clothing is a whole different ball game, and comes with its own rules, limitations and the like.
So, food for thought, had fun doing it nevertheless, Deviant Arts Art Director was incredibly passionate and enthusiastic, cool guy to work for, and it was good to revisit it today and go my own way with the colours,
