CONTEST SUBMISSION for the 'sHistorical Era Contest 2010.all entries at:[link]
info on contest (which ends erm, 'today' XD;;; ): [link]
DEPICTS: The Polish–Soviet War (February 1919 – March 1921).
this piece took me an age...ORZ. 1st, i fell sick a month ago...(am still happily co-inhabiting with cough germs...
TT TT) then it got tangled up with my commission deadlines and work deadline...aaaargh!***tears hair out***
finally i got time this week TT TT. am really really glad i redrew Russia, 'coz the 1st ver of him makes me so irritated i er, exterminated him XD(izzat possible???); and redrew him again XD. aaah, now he looks more...bishie~
real reason (s) i chose this topic out of the others was because...i really wanted to draw Russia
was worth all the %$# delays just to get to draw him~hehehehehe
then i read this in wikipedia:'According to the British historian A.J.P. Taylor, the Polish–Soviet War "largely determined the course of European history for the next twenty years or more. […] Unavowedly and almost unconsciously, Soviet leaders abandoned the cause of international revolution." It would be twenty years before the Bolsheviks would send their armies abroad to 'make revolution'.[27][92] According to American sociologist Alexander Gella "the Polish victory had gained twenty years of independence not only for Poland, but at least for an entire central part of Europe.' ---OK, AM DRAWING THIS~
explaining artwork: used a map i found suitable, and just downplayed the tone, as i was aiming for a little text book-old world feel. i feel there would be more impact showing them up against a backdrop of the --quote from wikipedia---1920 map from The Peoples Atlas showing the situation of Poland and the Baltic states with their still-undefined borders after the treaties of Brest-Litovsk and Versailles and before the Peace of Riga.
wish i could have done better with the colouring. tried to colour in Sai, but because i am unfamiliar with it...(kept on typing shortcut keys for PS and Flash, lol) back to Flash we go~
note***this is NOT meant for propaganda and what nots!
references, map at background, Poland's uniform and symbol on shield taken fromwikipedia [link]
Poland's pose taken from this poster, as a nod to its historical reference : [link]
program used: Flash 8 for both linearts, colours and er, mini photo manip
*****************update (half an hr later)************
******update 2 (16 May)****************
tanx for suggesting the edit on shield
****update 3(18th May)*****

Its just that he's portrayed as really girly and usually looks like that in a lot of pictures...or at least most Ive seen. Yours has the right amount of both.

This is beyond epic! The shield is a dashing addition and Russia looks imposing yet Poland remains up for the challenge.
Amazing work!

A very nice piece! As a history nut, it kind of saddens me that Belarus isn't included (both because of her popularity in Hetalia's fandom, and the Polonization of West Belarus that was an important part of that war--a bit about it here: [link] ).
Nonetheless, both their poses are particularly dynamic. The detail on Poland's shield is also very, very nice, and her posture is very lifelike too. Good work!

thank you, am glad u like it i meant to include both her and Ukraine (by the way, Poland is a guy...he likes to dress as a girl sometimes though, or so i read!XD), but i was kinda afraid of making it historically inaccurate, as it seems from this article that Ukraine was involved in both ways, and i was like thinking,'uh oh..' XD haha [link] but would love to draw her and Belarus someday! the three siblings made me laugh when i read about them

Oh...to be honest, I wasn't sure if Poland was a guy or girl.
Still, it's a very nice piece of artwork.

thanks. i understand your dilemma...when i first watched it, i was like, huh, am i very very sure that's a gal? is that really a guy or gal?--whenever a new character came along now that i have the comic book, am clearer, since it includes the details of most countries...including gender

I guess that's part of the charm of the series, hah. Well, maybe not to me, but to others. It's still quite charming though.

Good work - but remember, that an eagle which you use is from 1927 - in 1921 polish coat of arms looks like this: [link]
