Description
The promised weather icons are here! 74 brand spankin' new Tango icons for your viewing pleasure. None of the original Tango weather icons included here (except in the Samurize icon config) because you can get those stock with any tango iconset. The samurize config is included as "tango.weather.rar". In order to use this with Weather.2004, simply unzip and drop the folder into the directory with your other samurize icons, and change your Samurize config to point to the new icon directory. Boom-bow, Tangoified Samurize!
Moon phases
Moon phases with weather conditions
Hot (think VERY sunny)
Icy
Dusty
Smog
Haze
Thundershower
Freezing Rain/Sleet
Fog (redone, old Tango wasnt very usable in other scenarios)
As always, 48x48 with SVGs included.
Edit 9/24/08: Updated Hazy/Foggy/Dusty/Smoggy icons, based on user feedback. Please note that the Foggy icon IS original in execution, but not in idea. I created the SVG from scratch based on the Unabashed Tango Theme icon by Lokheed (here: [link] ). I didnt have access to the SVG, so it is my own work, but using his original design. Much thanks for that, Lokheed.
Also added Windy and Windy + Rain icons on request, original creations that I would very much like some feedback on. I like how they came out, but not to the point where I feel the best about them.

I returned here after some time and, what a surprize! New fog/haze/etc icons (very very good) and wind/wind+rain!
I like the wind metaphor you used, I can just suggest as a feedback that the outline might be a little lighter (it seems a bit too solid to me). Good work, anyway.
p.s.: I've just read the continuation of my thread about licensing and sincerely thank you for understanding. I didn't think about using a private message but in fact you are right, that would have been better. Sorry, I'll remember for the future.

Its fine, all taken care of.
I actually updated the wind/wind-rain icon again since I last published these, I used a white-transparent gradient to fade out the wind in the upper right, but that doesnt quite work. Its been changed to be actually transparent now...I'll update when I get a chance.

If that is your wish, then the CC-by-sa fits your needs! Please consider indicating this in this page (you can find the buttons when editing the deviation, at the bottom).
Thank you for drawing a windy icon... no, no moon phases, but a windy+rain would also be useful for that set. Oh and one more if you don't matter, one icon for "unknown weather". Thanks again!

Note: in fact, you must distribute your icons under CC-by-sa because they are derivative works of Tango icons which have the same license (that's the meaning of "sa", share-alike)

Honestly, I could care less. I'll put it on there, if only to avoid future complaints, but it surprises me that people cant just enjoy something without threatening me with language like I MUST put this license on there. Disheartens me a little that something fun has to be bogged down in minutia.
Such is life.

Such is license.
It has nothing to do with threatening you, or not enjoying something. And the something fun isn't bogged down in the minutia. If you were wilfully denying and violating the terms of the GPL, RMS would just as well give you an ear full. mischamajskij is simply saying that you agreed to a set of terms provided in a license, and therefore it is your responsibility to follow those terms.
There is nothing disheartening, or threatening about his tone, or what he said. It is simple fact.
Rather, what is disheartening, is the number of people who already take our icons and do what they please with them, violating the license, and not giving us proper attribution. There are commercial sites, open source apps, and fraudulent scam sites, all using our icons, without abiding by the license. He was simply asking you to do the right thing, and quoting the license to show you.

All things said and done, the license is added hopefully in all places where it should be added, so I hope everyone is happy now and can enjoy the work that has been done both by the original tango artists and also my derivative and original works.

And therefore I have done the right thing. Its never my intention to violate another's trust, or put them in a situation where their work is used unscrupulously.
As such, I have added the CC-sa license to the icons in my gallery that were either combined with existing tango icons or are derivative works of existing tango icons.
Know what would've been nice? A private message asking me to do this instead of a thread viewable by the public.

I didn't create the thread. I was just clarifying what was already said. Personally, I've just given up on trying to get people to respect the license. It's too much work trying to track down everyone, and write legally meaningful messages to them (think corporate types). And, we're completely reworking the Tango icon theme anyway.
Thanks though. If I was going to find something to complain about with this set of icons, it would probably be the fog/haze/dust/etc... icons instead, as I don't think they really show what they are very well, and the shapes remain the same across all of those icons, with only changes in color and level of alpha. For "haze" I think a better metaphor would be to just have some common object as a reference, and a mostly transparent area on top with blur, to simulate the mirage effect. Anyway, the ice icon is pretty nice.

I am working on this...taking and redoing from scratch the fog icon from the Unabashed tango set (dont have the SVGs for that "fog" icon, so I had to start over).
However, I'm having a rough time trying to achieve the effect you are describing. Fog was simple enough, but haze is proving to be more challenging simply because I would like to make the topmost area have a sorta wavy-heat-type look, to blur whats underneath. Can inkscape do gradients like that? Blur is OK, but its not quite what I envisioned.

Hrmm. Well, I thought blur would just make the mirage effect happen, but it doesn't. It seems all blur does for me is make a circular area of alpha based on the object's color.
You could do the mirage effect with a gradient probably, but I think you'd need a lot of stops alternating between FFFFFF00 and FEFEFE00 or something else very close to white, but not quite, and totally alpha. I never actually tried to get a real icon with my suggestion. I just think having an icon that looked that way would be better than the icons we have now.

I think I got it closer... I tried repeatedly with something like this and it just wound up looking closer to "dusty" rather than "haze". Its tough because they are close in the real world too.
The way I've been thinking about this is:
Fog - Grayish, like you are inside a cloud
Haze - I really like the mirage wavy-lines type look, but its been a bear to try and get
Smog - Dark and thick obfuscation of the skyline, via particulate matter
I have Fog and Smog done, and I think I have something working for Haze. I'll upload a preview tomorrow probably.

Yea I'm not a big fan of how those icons came out, but I was having a heck of a time coming up with an appropriate metaphor that I could then reuse on things like moon phases if necessary. I wound up just recoloring the clouds, which sucks but was the only real solution I could think of. Of course I realize there is already a fog icon in the stock set, but it wasn't reusable enough unfortunately.
As I said in my earlier journal, please suggest improvements. I'm not an artist really, I just like to have my desktop looking nice and have a passion for the Tango style. Better to do it yourself than try and wait for someone else to have time to do it. If there is a better metaphor for something or a way I can improve the icons that is always welcome.
Thanks for the positive feedback on the ice icon, I really do like how that one came out.

Sorry if it sounded threatening, it was only "legalese"... I could have written "should". Then I wrote it in italic, not in bold, not in capital letters. Italic means quoting. I was quoting the license.
In any case, sorry again.

Wow, this is what I was waiting for!
Very good work! That "icy" icon is sooo cute!
I can proceed to the packaging for the xfce4 applet now... hum, I'll think of something for the "wind", it's still missing...
P.S.: you forgot the license. Maybe CC-by-sa, as all Tango icons?

I'm not so worried about the license...I don't care if anything I do is used by anyone
I've used and been inspired by so many of the tango artists, all I want is for others to have the same chance.
You are right about the wind though, and I have an idea for an icon for it. Somehow that must've been overlooked!
You interested in simply windy, or windy + moon phases as well? Itll take me a bit longer if you want both.

Does this mean that, now that Tango base has been released into the public domain, your licensing terms are the same?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DarKobra In reply to ssokolow [2009-07-28 00:36:35 +0000 UTC]
That is correct. Even though this could be released as GPL/CC-by-sa now, I chose to make it public domain. There is no license on these, but providing attribution like you did in the post you linked me to is very much appreciated!

Good to know. I'll keep these in mind for the next time I need weather icons. (I'm studying online and I'm generally a stay-indoors kind of guy, so I see weather as something you experience if you look out the window and like what you see.)
