GRAFFITI CHARACTERS CAME LONG BEFORE GRAFFITI LETTERS, BOTH IN PREHISTORY, AS WELL AS MODERN HISTORY

People are just too scared and biased to accept this FACT.

One of the biggest myths in graffiti is that it's ONLY based on letters.

But way too many deny the TRUTH and that is that CHARACTERS came BEFORE letters.

All throughout history, graffiti was symbolized via animal and people figures, NOT letters.

Letters didn't arrive in graffiti, until THOUSANDS of years later.

Even in modern graffiti, characters evolved right alongside the evolution of letters.

Far too many writers believe characters are just side decorations to their styles, because they are unaware that BEFORE even one set of letters was done in spray paint, there were characters drawn with it in the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s.

In 1947, when spray paint became branded, the first graffiti used by it was a combination of regular text, characters, and symbols, NOT stylized letters!

Stylized graffiti letters wouldn't be invented until DECADES later!

This is why every film made before the late 1960s, does NOT have graffiti styles in them.

In contrast, the character Kilroy, Mickey Mouse and Felix the cat, were being drawn with markers and spray paint on walls, during WW2, LONG before ANY stylized letters ever marked a train or wall.

So why the animosity against characters?!

This has to do with pioneer writers in the 70s, using already popular comic characters, like Bode, Bashki, Phoglio, and Doonsbury, instead of creating their own.

Yet even so, hundreds of original style characters DID evolve parallel to letter styles as time passed.

But because the majority of writers are simply AFRAID to challenge some of the graffiti oldschool pioneers, this myth remains a common belief.
