Description
It's been some years since I took this photo. It's amazing how much a route changes in two years.I had taken this photo asΒ a way to photograph my entire roster at the time. Back then, the rostser consisted of one of the old LGB Santa fe starter sets, a First Generation Bachmann Big Hauler set, An electric Big Hauler (I don't know which generation it is), A Bachmann connie, and a new Bachmann spectrum K-27. The black gondola and the yellow passenger car (Both LGB products, DRGW roadname) were purchased secondhand from a man in town years ago. The green observation car was acquired from evil ebay from a seller that was separating a starter set.
This would be one of the last photos of the yard and the abandoned siding in the background. Both would be removed a few months later. A station and a water tower sit on the site of the old yard, leaving only the passing siding. The coaling platform still exists, but remains in storage as I try to find a place for it. As for the siding, It's now the site of a small house.
The only loss in the roster was the LGB starter set, which was sold to my parents. Although it's still being stored in my room for some reason. However, several pieces of rolling stock have taken it's place. Those include three LGB freight cars, five Bachmann kits, a Spectrum Murphy roof boxcar, a Spectrum caboose, a track cleaning car, two more first generation Big haulers (Both still run), and another brand spanking new K-27.

Yes... this is true... X3
Though going back to the 7/8ths live steam topic, I've seen some AMAZING modifications to the Accucraft Emma to make it into a Maine style Forney! There's a guy on youtube, just search for "Eric Schade". His channel shows his garden railway, all live steam, and much of his handiwork! He started off modeling Maine narrow gauge in F scale on gauge one. (Weird because that's technically 3ft gauge in scale) but has been shifting over to 7/8ths recently. His Forney, the "Morning Star" was a bash using the Accucraft Emma. Removing the saddle tank, extending the frame back, adding a trailing truck and scratch built a new cab and tender tank. It is a VERY nice bash, and with a 'hidden' working whistle!

Oh yeah, I remember reading a few of his articles in GR.
And that's pretty cool!

I started getting more active on the Seven Eighths Lounge forum recently. Relearning more about the hobby and what can be done for motive power. Since my 7.5" gauge Live Steamer concept is scaled to represent a 2' gauge locomotive I thought that would make a good starting point in terms of a model. Eric himself said it could make for a good Ruby bash!

Hmmm, that is a possibility. Prototypically though the engine was 18" gauge, though mine was upped to 20" for the Ocalla Tramway. I suppose I could up it a little farther to 2' gauge...

Are you familiar with the old Joe Works HOn30 engines? Most of them were caricatureΒ of prototype locomotives like the C&S 2-6-0s and DSP&P Mason Bogies. I really like the proportions of them and they're roughly 2' gauge. The new Minitrains line has been slowly re-releasing some of the old Joe Works equipment in plastic models now. The F&C passenger cars and new Caboose are based on the old JW brass models. They're also releasing a new 0-4-4 Forney styled after the early Hinkley engines.

And here is the original Joe Works one, notice the similarities?

Joe Works offered a number of different engine designs and I think all could be adapted into 7/8ths locomotives pretty well.

Actually, Yeah, I'm somewhat familiar with them. Never had one, as I've never really dabbled in small scale Narrow gauge, besides On30.
Their 2-6-0's were quite intresting...
Huh...I thought someone also released an outside frame 0-4-0...

Yes, that is part of the Minitrains line. It's actually based on a limited run of HOn30 Brass Models, supposedly based on a locomotive design by Carl Fallberg and one of his Fiddletown & Copperopolis locos. Haven't seen anything remotely similar in his comics, but it's a nice looking engine.
Also, did you receive this link I posted on your front page?

It has some drawings/diagrams for the more Colorado inspired offerings from Joe Works.

They're neat little things, and I think the Bogies would translate well into 7/8ths scale.

Yes, I've heard of it. Though I don't recall the name or know much about it. But what is known is that there were some strange locomotives designs to grace the pages of history.

From what I understand, those were run until they were worn out, and replaced with modern 2-10-2's late into the 20th century... Don't know if there were any survivors.
Indeed. Though not much sticks out to me.

I'm not sure either, but I liked those 2-10-2 locomotives. They had some very nice, burly proportions.

Aside from my Lionel 0-6-0T, the only other large scale motive power I have is a Bachmann "Annie" which came from the Rocky Mountain Express set and my Echo battery engine bash. (Hopefully I can get some paint within the week and finish the domes and smoke box. Then on with the new boiler wrapper!)
My problem is Model Railroad A.D.D. There are just some many fun scales and gauges out there it's hard to just pick one to settle on! If I ever build a garden railway myself I'm still debating on whether I'll model Fn3 or go BIG and go 7/8n2. (Which is VERY appealing because of the size and detail potential) Even so, I'd still like a small collection of Fn3 equipment. The "Abuelo" is really my first true attempt at F scale.
You do have a nice collection here, even if it has changed over time. And I am loving the coaling platform there in the background!

Can't wait to see it finished! Personally, I plan on acquiring at least 3 more Bachmann 4-6-0's. One to turn into a C&S mogul (I saw a pic of a Quick N Dirty conversion), the other for the RGS T-19 (I have the drawings for the cab. :3), and if I'm lucky, a BBT c-16 chassis to make RGS #74, or one of her sisters.
XD Well, if wanted every most every single steam locomotive you ever saw counts as Model Railroad A.D.D, I had a REAL bad case of it back in my teens. I think it still lingers around a little, as I still scour the net something fierce for the Bachmann Indy, porter,Β mallet, and LGB mogul.
I get what you mean. 7/8n2 IS very big, but they've only just started commercially producing cars and engines for it, so it's very much a scratch builder's /kit basher's scale.
And the coaling platform actually was out this year by the station and water tower. Though I need to take the nailgun to it this year. The gorilla glue is coming undone. Not all that surprising, as I made it at the end of my Senior year in High school.

When it comes to modeling I am VERY much the kitbasher, and I reckon that's the appeal for me and 7/8n2. And of course my small scale endeavors with On30 and more so On20. The other appeal for 7/8ths though is how close it is to Doll House scale, which opens up a lot of detail possibilities. Not to mention structures.

π: 0 β©: 1
gunslinger87 In reply to Darkriderexe [2014-12-24 17:03:30 +0000 UTC]
In all likelyhood, if I were to go into 7/8ths (more like a 'when' than an 'if') I'd probably go freelance, but I'd draw a lot of inspiration from both Maine NG and the Gilpin. The 7.5" gauge live steam engine I'm planning is scaled to be a 2ft gauge loco so I may make a model of a model in that case!
But I LOVE the Sandy River 2-6-0s and some of the early Fornys. And I'm a sucker for any steamer with outside frames. XD
A shay may be a bit too much though and I'll stick with smaller Rod type locos. Like Accucraft's "Emma", as an example. Although be prepared to see box headlamps and diamond stacks everywhere!
