Inspired by Hope, Vol. by Apocalyptica. The same song is the one that the Doctor's mind quotes as he falls.

I've been wanting to write a fanfic that was entirely a dream, so here it is. Well, almost all of it is a dream. The ending isn't.

The idea is that he was wearing the blue cravat in the dream, so in order to have it not come true, he wore the red one from The Trial of a Time Lord: Mindwarp and The Trial of a Time Lord: The Ultimate Foe, so he's just about to go to wherever it was that they met the warlord who wanted the phazer thingies.

Also I wrote this just after I went to the doctor to find out why I was sick. Turns out there's this little microbe called the influenza virus that is liking the taste of me. I haven't had the flu in at least a decade, so I wasn't expecting it. (BTW it's just a very mild case)

Oooh. Very chilling. Also...have you ever seen Babylon 5? Somewhat reminds me of the deal with Londo knowing that he was wearing purple in that one vision, so he goes and puts on the black outfit instead...and then due to his dry cleaning not coming back or something like that, he ends up putting on his old purple outfit back on in a later season, just once...and THEN he walks out to see the vision from his dream come true.

Well I didn't say the comparison was _perfect_. Anyway. Having just recently-ish seen "Mindwarp"...ouch. This story kinda hits home for me, at this moment. I don't care _what_ people think about Peri, that is one of the DARKEST-ass things I have _ever_ seen on the classic show. Gah...

Have I seen Babylon 5? Have I seen Babylon 5? HAVE I SEEN BABYLON 5?!?! Heck yes! Incidentally I'd forgotten all about that incident...I'm usually far too interested in what the Minbari and Rangers are doing XD Member of the Mira Furlan fan club--sharing a first name and a last initial certainly helps. Still, maybe a seed of that scene rooted itself in my mind and came out here.

And I agree, Peri's peudo-death is chilling, but as I have theorized in one of my other fanfics, what makes us believe the Master over the Valeyard? It's not like we have reason to trust what the Master says...

HAHAH. Why am I _not_ surprised you've seen Babylon 5...? I guess the reason I asked is because lately I've run across some classic sci-fi-fan nerdtypes who _haven't_ seen it, and have been reccommending it all over the place. So yeah.

As for Peri's "pseudo-death" and the Master...well I haven't actually seen that far yet. I have seen the first episode of "Terror of the Vervoids" and that's it, as I KEEP waiting for my friend to write me back (I want to be ahead of her in the (classic) series, but not _too_ far ahead.) Still, I dunno...even Ainley-Master, while nowhere _near_ as cool as Delgado, has my vote above the bitchface Scrapyard. He just...yikes. He just rubs me the wrong way.

Well, put it this way: I read somewhere that Colin Baker wrote a graphic novel in which, among other things, we find out that Peri is alive and well on Whatchamathingie Planet, so...if it's good enough for the Doctor himself, it's good enough for me!
(Besides, there is ENOUGH darkness on TV already. If there's even a _chance_ that one bit of horrible dark creepy stuff can perhaps _not_ be true, I'm inclined to jump at it. I mean, come on. I know Peri is one of everybody's least favourites, but NOBODY deserves THAT! To have their mind wiped... I mean if she died taking a bullet for somebody _fine_, but not that...)

LOL sorry didn't mean to spoil any endings.

And the comic that Colin Baker wrote--The Age of Chaos--I've read it. I've got a PDF of it, actually. It's rather good. Just the constant "VROOOMNIK"ing from one of the characters annoys me. There's one scene in particular that's positively hilarious.

Huh. I'd like to read that...

As for the spoiler...well I _vaguely_ knew that at the end of the Trial, it gets revealed that Peri somehow ended up as the Queen of Whatchamathingie? (I know, "Krontep", I'm just being silly on purpose.) What I _didn't_ know was that the Master was involved in any way with that episode. But I suppose he's gotta show back up sometime.

The Master's gotta show up! He's the Master! (Fav Who villain btw if I haven't already said that)

And--*shuts up about potential future spoiler theory* mmmm....

Ha! Yeah. Actually, he's my favourite villian, too. I absolutely ADORED! him as his original incarnation, played by Richard Delgado. He was pure awesomeness on a _stick_.
Ainley isn't _as_ cool, but I still like him anyway. Certainly I give him more credit than it seems most fans do. And every now and then, you still see a little..._hint_ of the great "best enemies" rapport he and the Doctor used to have...

(And maybe, just MAYBE, one of these days, I will be able to type that name _without_ writing it as "Ainely" at first. But this is not that day. )

I haven't yet seen John Simm's version in action yet, or the one from the movie, so I don't have an opinion on them if you're wondering...

..er...it's Roger Delgado, not Richard. Hehehe...

You need to see Simm's version. He's bonkers.

I knew that, I knew that...! (smacks self upside head) WHY do I keep getting things like that wrong lately... My brain is dead. I mean, we were just barely _watching_ episodes he was in, the other day...
Anyway, he is--whether I can remember his first name or not!--definitely my favourite. I LOVE how the Doctor and Master's relationship was originally written. So...cool...

And yes, I've er, heard about Simm's version. Heheh. Mainly in terms of giggling fangirl memes about of COURSE he and the Doctor are gay for each other, don't be silly, and isn't he so HOTT! tee hee hee.
Which sort of put me _off_ him, but I realise that's totally not his fault. I still very much plan to watch _all_ the new episodes in order, when I get up to them properly.

At the moment I'm going through the original series at a snails' pace, because I don't want it to "end" just yet, and am also watching other things in between. So yeah.

Oh, tell me about it. I've been unrightfully put off SO many things by accidentally hearing the cliche opinions from The Fandom before experiencing the thing in question for myself...

But I guess it sorta balances out in the end, 'cos, while I tend to be unimpressed by things that I heard HYPED to the RAFTERS before I actually saw them...and therefore perhaps like them less than I might have otherwise...I _also_ have a tendency to see all the good points of things that everybody else DOESN'T like. I've given a fair few Companions that "everybody hates" more of a fair chance _because_ "everybody hates" them, for one thing. So there's that.

I try not to be swayed by public opinion--for example, everyone raves that the new Star Trek movie is win and we should all go see it or we'll miss out on life. I thought it was an ok movie, but a rubbish Star Trek movie. But at least the guy playing McCoy had DeForest Kelley's mannerisms down so insanely well you didn't need to be told it was McCoy. I also loathe the movie Napoleon Dynamite. However, several TV shows I watch are quite popular in my area, House being the one that springs instantly to mind.

And as for finding good things in hated companions--people say Peri whined too much. But what would you do if you were abandoned by your stepdad, nearly drowned, and found yourself on a different planet before nearly being killed by poison and then throttled by a friend who changed everything about him? If she didn't have reason to complain, I don't know who does...

Captain-Chaotica In reply to darksporechild [2009-05-21 22:54:46 +0000 UTC]

OHMYGOD, _what_ is the deal with Napoleon Dymanite? I have NEVER gotten why that movie is so popular! I tried watching it and the key word here is: tried. I _barely_ made it through to the end. It wasn't funny, and it just...yeah. The pacing. It just didn't work. It just kind of...sat there. Nothing ever quite happened. There wasn't any feeling of building plot and resolution.
Now, I know a lot of art-house type films are made in non-traditional plot structures like that, but thing is, I've seen arty films that were INTERESTING. This one, wasn't.

And as for the Trek movie...hahaha. Oh dear. I just recently got to see that finally and the verdict is still...out...Well I HATE what they did with certain parts of the continuity. I don't _care_ if it's an alternate universe, YOU DO NOT DESTROY VULCAN AND ROMULUS. PERIOD.
(My mom came out of the theater basically being happy and in a good mood about the movie, but at the same time, being all: "In MY universe Vulcan still EXISTS, thank you!" I _soooooo_ wanted to be able to say something along the lines of "WELCOME TO _MY_ WORLD" because I've been ignoring the parts of canon that say _Gallifrey_ is destroyed and there's no way at all to undo the Time War, for a long time now! But she's nowhere near that in the series and it's one major spoiler I've been able to protect her from so far.)

I disagreed with a fair few other details I can't quite remember properly right now (by the way, I'm currently sick off my FACE so if I'm a little incoherent, forgive me), basically the way the whole thing was--as with the New Who--moderned and SEXIED!! up!! to get the Youngun's interested!! but...

Oh wait I DO know what I'm specifically thinking of: SPOCK AND UHURA!! Whatever happened to the whole "Oh, I don't have emotions, I'm so _sorry_ I can't love you, Nurse Chapel. I couldn't even tell my mother I loved her!" breaking down tragically, and the whole Pon Farr business? Now, we find out he can be _really_ emotional and also sexual with any woman at any time I DON'T THINK SO! (Course, that _does_ kind of answer a question the fans had been wondering about ever since "The Amok Time" first played...during the time between the seven-year-itches: is it "can't" or "_won't_"? IF we take this as canon, which, I'm not sure.)

And I notice, WHEN the aloof, adored by fangirls but usually, on the show itself, platonic alien _became_ more warm and open and instantly CLUNG! to the nearest attractive Earth female...was because he was feeling shaken up and unsual BECAUSE HIS _PLANET_ BLEW UP. I call shenanigans. I also call Russel T. Davies on the phone. (Not really.)
Exactly the same new way the Doctor started acting...for exactly the same Plot Convenience Theater reasons. Hmmm.

Not that I object to them getting together _if they were other people_. I mean if they were Sims I'd TOTALLY breed them just to see the babies. But, not _our_ Spock and Uhura...
(Besides, Uhura is supposed to have had a crush on _Scotty_ all this time. )

The bit at the beginning with Young Kirk racing across Iowa to "Sabotage"...oy. I mean I kinda _like_ the Beastie Boys for some reason? (Their lyrics are witty, what...) but it didn't belong here. Although it did occur to me that this would be a GREAT time period to go joy-riding in because: hardly anybody uses ground vehicles anymore...! You could have the road to yourself. Sweet! I wanna go bike-riding in the future. (snerk)
Although why was there a great whacking canyon in the middle of IOWA?!! I've _lived_ there. Iowa is like this: _______________________
It does not have canyons!
I suppose it could be a quarry/earthwork...(hey, can't have a sci-fi movie without a bloody quarry!) or, as my Trekkie friend Nathan pointed out, a remnant of some earlier attack on Earth by an alien race. Maybe when the Xindi were carving great hunks out of the landscape on "Enterprise".

Anyway, sorry, didn't mean to go on about that so long. My end diagnosis? Fun as a movie itself..._eh_ as a Trek movie. It was more entertaining and better-done than a lot of the most RECENT other ones...but the complete undoings of huge wads of continuity/sexxying up characters just because they could annoyed me. So basically...I enjoyed it on a shallow level but disliked it on a Trekkie level. And I was _raised_ Trekkie ever since I was born, on reruns of the classic show.
(However, my mom, who is the one who raised me that way, seemed to like it better than I did. Although she is still arguing that "VulcanIStsillthere, grumblegrumble" so there's that anyway.)

As for Peri...I'd like to point out here (as I have before, elsewhere) that not only did all that bad stuff happen to her, but she stuck...AROUND!! I mean, seriously. Attack of the Cybermen--just _barely_ after the Doctor tried to strangle her. She's still nervous when he comes near her, at the beginning of the first episode, and he has to actually _say_, out loud, that he promises he won't hurt her. He's still out of it enough to keep getting her name wrong (including, apparently, calling her "Jamie" at one point. Just as well he got THAT out of his system before "The Two Doctors". )

And then, during this still kinda-iffy time period, they land not only on Earth, her home planet...but in the _exact right year_.
This is the _perfect_ time for her to just fade off and escape from this crazy alien shapeshifter...

AND SHE _STILL_ DOESN'T LEAVE!!

I'd just like that down for the record. Despite all the bad things that happened to her _and_ the perfect chance to escape, Peri. Stuck. Around.

Says it all, really.
(Also, similar points to Tegan for deliberately asking to come back, AFTER she already knew full well how dangerous it was out there. I respect loyalty/bloody-minded suicidalness...)

I started laughing when I heard Sabotage coming out of that radio system thingy. I was like "greeeaaaaat, now we know something's gonna happen to that car." And I totally agree about the don't-destroy-Vulcan issue. If I could live on one planet in the Trekverse, that would be it. (When I was about seven, a group of kids got together at a company picnic of my dad's and started discussing what we wanted to be when we grew up...and I said I wanted to be a Vulcan.)

And as for the destruction of Gallifrey, I've got a nifty explanation of how it's not destroyed (well, technically how it was undestroyed because time altered so it wasn't destroyed in the first place)...

I was annoyed that the skies of Vulcan weren't congruous with the ones seen in The Voyage Home--in other words, orange. (and what is it with me and planets with orange skies--or two suns, as I also dig the Minbari?)

At least they didn't blow the Uhura/Spock connection out of control, you know, no bedroom scenes, but it was still annoying. I like my guys abstainant. Presuming I spelled it correctly (and I just finished playing Scrabble too!).

Points to Tegan are agreed.
