Description
Late in the One Year War, the Earth Federation came to realize a problem with the RX-78-2 Gundam. While certainly powerful, the emergence of Amuro's Newtype abilities meant that his skills were outpacing the Gundam's own capabilities. To more completely take advantage of his powers, the Federation began work on the RX-78-NT Project, creating a new variation of the Gundam to more aptly handle his powers.

The Prototype Alex featured two massive innovations to the design that would later become standard in most Mobile Suits. The experimental Magnetic Coating enabled it to perform more quickly, while the 360 Cockpit allowed visibility on all sides. These features proved excellent even in the hands of Oldtype test pilot Christina Mackenzie, who used the Prototype Alex to devastating effect in the defense of Jaburo. Upon completion of the test, additional capabilities would be affixed to the unit as it and Chris were transferred to Side 6.
