Description A light tank designed to replace M3 and M5 Stuarts, small numbers of the M24 Chaffee were introduced in 1944, first seeing action in Italy, and later taking part in the crossing of the Rhine. The Chaffee was a marked improvement over the Stuarts they replaced in almost every respect, having greater range and a far more powerful 75mm gun that could take on German Panzers. However, lighter armor made it more vulnerable to anti-tank fire. While ultimately serving only a limited role in World War II, the Chaffee would go on to see extensive service in the Korean War.

Was the M18 Hellcat built on it's chassis? They seem very similar.

True, but remember, this was introduced at a time when the M-26 Pershing was being introduced as the new heavy tank. This was much lighter in comparison, therefore a "light tank."

I don't believe they had a Pershing on display. They did, however, have an M-48 Patton on display, so....

Where were you at, Aberdeen Proving Grounds? My dad did his basic training as an Ordnance Specialist at Abedeen before going to Korea to serve with the 58th Ordnance Ammo Co. during the Korean War.
When I was a kid, he took me there and we climbed all over all the tanks. I guess they wouldn't let you do that today, but it's something I'll never forget. I remember there being a huge bomb planted in the ground displayed there too.

Yep, the old Ordinance museum. Has to be one of the coolest places I've ever visited.

As for that huge bomb, I believe that was the so-called "Earthquake bomb" used during WWII, it would be dropped away from the target, burrrow itself into the ground, and then detonate and destroy everythign with a seismec shockwave.

Cool! I thought that looked familiar. I'd like to go down there again, it's only a few hours drive from here. They have an M-41 at Aberdeen like my uncle was on in Korea that I'd like to get some pictures of. My dad has a bunch of photos from when he was at APG.
