This is great and you clearly show great potential as an amazing painter but as many have mentioned before, it's a little static. The figures look very wood, they're missing that classic essence that real people have and many artists miss out when they DON'T use reference.
My advice is to use reference if you're doing something with human figures. People are just too recognisable, so the smallest mistakes on your part stick out like a sore thumb. There's nothing wrong with using reference, it certainly isn't cheating. Renaissance masters like Caravaggio and Michelangelo swore by reference, and would never do a painting without it- some even used a tracing technique

No problem! Mattepainting I'd say, is completely different to using reference. It's good for special effects in films but for an illustrator, it is cheating a bit.
This is all opinion though, many professional artists mattepaint on a daily basis and get paid a lot of money and respect for it.
Either way, try some reference, even if its just to practice your anatomy. Thanks for listening ha!
