Thanks. These were just trees, from memory..."fire-resistant suikerbossie (sugar bush) protea" which have a somewhat puffy bark that resists fires.

Proteas are known for the big, decorative flowers they have, that are often used in a lot of arrangements. There are some that grow quite well over here as well, as introduced species.
