Well, he was the first mentor, so technically he was "Al Mualim".

If you mean the title - then yes - "Al Mualim" means "Mentor". If you refer to the character from first AC game, then no - his name was Rashid a din Sinan or something.

Hasan-i-Sabbah was basically the Muallim of all Muallims back in the day, but the reason why he wasn't mentioned in the game is because historically he was known for his affinity towards using psychedelics in training his followers. He named his people "Al Asasiyun", which literally means "the Fundamentals" or "those who follows the fundaments" but that was turned against him late and they got dubbed "Al Hashashin" which means "potheads", which was rendered in Italian as "Assassino" and then to the other languages. Sabbah was in fact Sinan's master.

There was the intention to have a novel focused more on the historical assassins but stuff got in the way...

It is rather odd how they mention the historical Hashshashins more than they do the guy who founded them.
