Description 100 Pictures Challenge #22: Mother Nature.

I was going through my gallery when I realised, to my dismay that (1) there was an utter lack of landscape drawings, largely due to (2) the tragic fact that I cannot do scenery to save my life. So I dug out a bunch of photos and set out to do a bit of practicing, reasoning that, even if I never paint a decent mountain, I'd at least get a bit of workout in the right direction, and at least understand how light affects natural formations.

I allowed myself about 30 minutes per picture (more for the waterfall one since I didn't even know where the hell to start), and painted with my canvas zoomed out all the way so that there was no way I could be tempted to obsess over detail or attempt to reproduce the photo references down to the last blob of moss. You can tell where I start to lose interest in each picture by the mess.

I think I've lost feeling in my right forefinger.

You're welcome

Also... what exactly is a Gizka?

DarthFar In reply to e--m--i [2007-04-21 04:07:52 +0000 UTC]

A gizka is a two-legged reptile from the Star Wars universe, particularly the role-playing game, Knights of the Old Republic. It can best be described as a frog-chicken hybrid, with breeding tendencies that would put a rabbit's to shame (heck, make that a whole burrow of rabbits). It also has green spots, which I couldn't put on my model because I only had orange-coloured plasticine.

That's a gorgeous collection. All of them are wonderful in colour and composition. I can't decide which is my favourite. Incredible.

Well, I'm jealous because landscapes are what I usually do and now I may never do them again because you are too awesome. *goes to try and rescind joining DA*

Sunset is my favorite, it really does look like a photograph. Ice is my second fav, am I the only one that thinks the small iceberg in front looks like Pegasus coming out of the water? Third is the waterfall, water is soooo hard to paint and you did a wonderful job! I hate sand, gets in all your shoes, socks, underwear and stuff but - you did do a good job!

Overall, it's a wonderful piece and I'm so proud to say you 'watch' to see if I will ever do anything good.
*humbly looks down and shuffles foot from side to side*

Perhaps you should go and pay my website gallery a little visit (they're arranged in reverse chronological order - oldest last). After you see horrors such as [link] and [link] and [link] you would probably be less inclined to feel jealous! (or discouraged). (and start thinking about what *your* work will look like six months from now, when you figure out how all the different tools work). I'll be watching you.

But thank you very much. Landscapes and architecture are two things I'm still feeling very insecure about; I'd like to work on them more, but for some reason I just keep going back to portraits. [chuckle]

And that comment about sand made me think of Anakin 'Angsty' Skywalker.

Thanks for the encouragement but, I have to say, even your old stuff is good. But, I admit you are awesome now so perhaps there is something to be said for this whole 'practice' idea.

So in light of the fact that your going to watch me, I guess I had better put some stuff up - so go grab a cold one and prepare to be underwhelmed.

Well, I have yet to send you American Psycho and moon pies, so it's just as well.
I would be out shopping for one right now but the christians are running rampant right now in a frenzy to blow loads of money on the coolest toys for their children, which will be used for a week then tossed aside. They seem to do this in honour of some guy's birthday. Supposedly he's to save their immortal souls. I can't understand how two grannies fighting over an Elmo doll honours this chap's birth.

Nice photography. So when did you go on the Arctic Cruise?

I kid you.

Seriously, speedpainting? Wow. If each of those took you half an hour, I wonder where a bit more time will take you. Wow!

DarthFar In reply to LatteBleu [2006-11-21 12:19:47 +0000 UTC]

Where a bit more time would take me... I suspect... nowhere further. I've the attention span of a gnat when it comes to scenery. Blargh.

But thank you. The Arctic Cruise would be an awesome vacation plan... unless of course the ship hit an iceberg.

Btw, Far, long time no see. Missed you much. T_T Excuse me for I will be away for some time now. *busy* T__T Keep up teh good work, ok!!

And haha, "is there NOTHING you CAN'T DO??" Yes, as a matter of fact. I can't draw architecture or tech stuff to save my life. Note the complete absence of buildings in my gallery.

Long time no see, jangan mati.

*Is tempted to whack you* Never ever say you can't do landscape to save your life. And you did these each around 30 mins?

I like the waterfall most. So fluffy. @_@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarthFar In reply to Firera [2006-11-20 08:30:34 +0000 UTC]

OW! Stop! stop! STOP!

But thank you very much. And yeah, about 30 minutes each (except for the waterfall one, which took longer - especially since, after I was done, I went back and plugged in a pixel here and a pixel there)... working time, that is, because I got up to get a drink/eat/go out etc in between each.

I'm not sure if waterfalls are supposed to be fluffy.

You have such skill, Far!

It's really impressive that this is not the type of work with which you're most familiar. You've got a real flair for nature - Robin Redbreast and now these landscapes... Gorgeous work, m'friend.

Myself, I'd have just churned out my usual tongue-in-cheek schlock, turned my paper 90° and called it landscape.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarthFar In reply to DobbyKnits [2006-11-19 04:19:08 +0000 UTC]

... Well, seeing as Andy Warhol once cut up one painting into four and presented them as four different works of art... I should try that 'rotate it 90 degrees' thing.

Thank you very much once again. I've been staying as far away from stuff I can't do for ages; it's time I faced them.

Those are some really nice speedpaintings you got down all the important things, the colours, the composition, the scale. the waterfall could perhaps need some harder edges, it looks a tad bit too blurry. but the rest is really nice. love your values especially on the left two ones.
Keep at those, nice work, I think over time you'll be able to come up with even sharper results in the same time

Daniel

Thank you very much. I think *all* of them could've used harder edges, LOL! but yeah, water (especially flowing water) is something I have no idea how to do, and need to work on. Thanks for your encouragement!

Well. I saw this in my inbox and thought you'd been practicing your photography. A closer look and a dose of common sense fixed that. This is really neat, it'd have been nice to see the four a bit larger and alone, but they're all great. The sunset is the most realistic, (is that a hay bale in the fore?!) and the freezescape is my favorite. I keep expecting penguins to pop up. You have all the colors right in the waterfall one, but I think your Jedi Enclave water looks better. And I like the desert scene a lot. You could set R2 and 3PO right down in that scene.

Great work!

And where would I find an iceberg in these [tropical] climes? I'm flattered, though, that you were actually fooled for a moment into thinking that these were photographs.

Penguins? not wampas?

Ah, something about it looked familiar! Although, I like your framing better than mine.

Yeah, penguins. I have a thing for penguins. Wampas are to be avoided, methinks. And yeah, the iceberg was the jolt of common sense that made me realize they weren't photos.

Excellent!

I admire folks who can actually complete landscape paintings. Or drawings. Or really, anything involving the word "landscape."

As someone with a terminal case of "shart attention span" I often manage to only get a horizon line in before getting distracted with something else, like my navel lint.

You're awesome! Keep it up!
