Chapter 11: Moonlight Howl

Later that night in Kate and Humphrey's den, Lilly, Garth, Hutch, an Wildflower had dropped by to prepare their pups for the Moonlight Howl.

"What is the Moonlight Howl about?" Star asks Kate as Garth grooms her,

"It's a special tradition that is used for when 2 wolves become couples." Kate says as she grooms Wildfire,

"Really?" Lupa asks as Wildflower grooms her,

"Yes." Humphrey replies while grooming Jet,

"And why do we have to take baths for this?" Ralph asks as Eve grooms him,

"Because we can't go there dirty and so we look our best when we go to the Moonlight Howl, right?" Aatu says as Hutch grooms him and turns to Lilly,

"Yes," Lilly says as she grooms Hunter, "At the Moonlight Howl, you have to be clean for when you go to Moonlight Howl and it's impolite to go there dirty."

"That should do it." Garth says as he finishes grooming Star, "Now there's just one thing missing… Oh, I remember!"

Garth pulls a small pink flower out of his mane and puts it in Star's, holding her bangs back so they don't fall in front of her face.

"Thanks, Dad." Star says as she gets to her feet,

"Here you go Wildfire, this should suit you for the Moonlight Howl." Kate says as she puts a small yellow flower in her daughter's fur.

"Okay," Wildfire says as she gets up and walks over to Star, followed by Aatu and Jet.

"Think this'll suit you?" Wildflower asks Lupa as she gives her small red flower,

"Yes, thanks." Lupa says as her mother puts the flower in her mane, then she walks over to the other pups, followed by Ralph and Hunter.

"Now you kids wait outside." Kate says, "We need to get ready ourselves. Wildfire, Hunter, Aatu, you're in charge."

"Yes, Mom." Wildfire says,

"Yes Aunt Kate." Hunter and Aatu say in unison and turn their attention to the omegas.

A few minutes later, the pups' parents come out prepared for the Moonlight Howl.

"Come on kids," Eve says, "It's time to go to Howling Rock."

The pups get onto their feet and follow after their parents.
Meanwhile, at Howling Rock, Winston, Tony, Claw, Scar, Salty, Shakey, Mooch, Marcel, and Paddy were waiting for the others to come.

"I wonder how much longer it'll take them." Scar says, breaking the silence.

"Soon I hope," Tony says, then he turns his head and sees 7 figured coming up followed by 7 smaller figures.

"There they are." Winston says as he walks over to the group, "Well, don't my daughters look beautiful tonight?"

"Thanks Dad." Kate says as Lilly giggles a bit.

"So, shall we get going?" Wildflower asks,

"Yes." Kate says, "Wildfire, Jet, you come me and your father. Star and Hunter, you go with your parents, Aatu, Lupa, Ralph, you three go with your parents."

"Yes Aunt Kate." Hunter and Aatu say in unison as they follow their parents with their siblings following.

Lilly, Garth, and their pups go halfway up the mountain and stop on a ledge.

"Okay. Hunter, Star, would you like to start?" Garth asks his pups and they nod.

Then Star and Hunter start howling and their parents listen.

"Star's voice is just like yours." Garth says,

"Sure is." Lilly says,

"By the way, may I have this dance?" Garth asks, getting onto his hind legs and bowing to Lilly.

"Of course you may." Lilly says, getting onto her hind legs.

Then Lilly and Garth start dancing together, howling along with their pups. Then Garth dips Lilly and "kisses" her, catching the white wolf by surprise for a moment before they look into each others' eyes lovingly.
Meanwhile, Kate, Humphrey, and their pups reach the top of the small mountain and pick their seats.

"Want to start kids?" Kate asks and Wildfire and Jet nod,

"Then go for it." Humphrey says and the 2 teenage pups start howling, followed by the howling of their parents when they howl.

Meanwhile, Hutch and Wildflower had sat down on a ledge while their pups sat on a ledge just above them. Hutch and Wildflower howl first, followed by their pups except for Lupa. Aatu notices and looks at the silent wolf.

"Hey, why aren't you joining in?" Aatu asks,

"I'm the shy pup, remember?" Lupa replies,

"Oh, come on." Aatu says encouragingly, "Just try."

Then Aatu goes back to howling. Feeling a bit confidant, Lupa attempts to howl, but it comes out so high pitched and off-key that every wolf at Howling Rock had to cover their ears, causing them to look at her. Lupa, knowing how bad at howling she is, stops and looks around see everyone staring at her. Then she blushes red out of embarrassment, which looked like a bright pink on her white fur.

"Uh… Pl-please excuse me." Lupa stammers, "I just some water, some water."

Lupa gives off a nervous laugh and takes off at full speed down Howling Rock with Aatu and Ralph chasing after her.

"Lupa! Wait!" Ralph calls after her, but Lupa doesn't answer.

"Lupa, stop!" Aatu yells out, "It was an accident, they always happen!"

"Well, I don't want anything to do with this!" Lupa whispers as she speeds up,

Lupa passes by Hutch and Wildflower, who catch her running by.

"Oh no." Wildflower says as she gives chase to Lupa while Aatu and Ralph stop at the same rock Hutch was still sitting on.

"Dang she's fast!" Ralph says as he collapses on the ground, exhausted,

"You'd surprised by what others do when they're scared." Hutch says, "Just let Mom go after Lupa, she's knows how to handle your sister."

Later, near the dens, Lupa had gotten exhausted from running. Then she sees Wildflower walking up to her.

"Hey Mom." Lupa says in a quiet tone,

"Hey Lupa." Wildflower says, "What happened?"

"I blew it." Lupa says, lying down, "My timid side got the best of me."

"It's okay." Wildflower says, nuzzling her daughter, "It was just a little stage fright."

"'A little'? I had everyone staring me due to my howling!" Lupa says,

"Okay, so that happened." Wildflower says, "But it's not like you'll be embarrassed for the rest of your life."

"Your point?" Lupa asks,

"'My point' is that you just can't give up." Wildflower says, "One mistake is nothing, you can always try again."

"You got a point." Lupa says, cheering up a bit.

"So, you want to try again, only out of the crowd?" Wildflower asks,

"Sure." Lupa says, "That is if there is a spot at Howling Rock where we can be alone if you're taking me back there."

"Okay." Wildflower says, "Come along."

Wildflower and Lupa walk back to Howling Rock and go to an area where they could be alone.

"Okay, Now try your best." Wildflower says, "Just remember I'm the only one here."

"Okay." Lupa says, then she howls, much better and more beautifully than last time.

"I knew you could do it." Wildflower whispers as she watches her daughter howl.

Back at the halfway point of Howling Rock, Lilly and Garth were watching their pups howl.

"Star's howling is just as beautiful as yours." Garth says to Lilly,

"And Hunter's as great as you were when I helped you learn to howl properly." Lilly says, cuddling up to her mate,

At the top of the rock, Kate and Humphrey were watching their pups howl too.

"They sound just like when you and I howled for the first time." Humphrey says,

"They sure do" Kate says as she leans on Humphrey,

At the bottom of Howling Rock, Winston and Eve were watching their family enjoy the Moonlight Howl.

"Looks like they're having fun." Winston says,

"Sure does." Eve says,

After a few hours, the Moonlight Howl had ended and everyone left.
