Aren't the sith allowed to design their lightsabers? I think the Jedi have a code for how their lightsabers must look and this code seems to be missing from the sith, so they have more leeway in their designs.

Probably so! I don't really know but that would explain why most Jedi lightsabers look very similar and there are some really interesting Sith Sabers.
