Description

In the 1982 TV adaptation of Ruddigore, two bats can be seen exiting the church as Sir Despard Murgatroyd appears to unmask Robin Oakapple at the end of Act I. And at the beginning of Act II, Robin—now Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd—is shown sleeping in a coffin like Count Dracula. Obviously, Ruddigore is the most terrifying comic opera made by Gilbert and Sullivan, so a bat could just as well be the family crest at the castle.
