This is a Spider-Man who has lost everything: his father figure and mentor, his aunt, his allies, his best friend, his girlfriend. This teenage hero has paid the price for wanting to have it all, for wanting to save everyone. Too late he realizes that "with great power comes great responsibility". The world may have forgotten him, but the events of Far From Home and No Way Home will haunt him forever.

With their last acts of cruelty, similar to that of the Joker, Mysterio and the Green Goblin had tainted everyone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with compromise and deception. I suppose they had the last laugh, after all…

Now, realistically, there is no way Peter Parker will ever be like his old self after Doctor Strange wiped everyone's memories; that little scene with Ned Leeds and Michelle Jones (M.J.) likely destroyed all hope of reconnecting. Even though he keeps on being Spider-Man—even if he isn't wearing an alien symbiote or dressed in black—his personality would have undergone a complete change. He'd become colder, quieter, more serious. And much like Batman, he would never again trust anyone so easily. Let J. Jonah Jameson tarnish him in the press; he would be done trying to clear his name.

The instant he puts on that mask, one can imagine the music of Batman: The Animated Series playing in the background. Listen as it heralds the arrival of justice, of divine retribution, of inner torment. It's just what any hero with nothing left to lose needs. God bless Shirley Walker.
