Description
Submission: Here!Species: Chirminaudir- Comes from the words Chiroptera, Erminea and aplaudir. They also go by Chirmins.
Class: Flying Wyvern
Rank: High
Element: Neutral
Weakness: Thunder
Biological Description: (Where it lives, what it eats, how it defends itself, what it hunts, what does it battle against, adaptations to keep it alive)
Chirminaudir reside in the jungle regions of Cascade Peaks and forests from the Frost-Laden Wastes. The medium-sized flying wyverns live in large groups called colonies where they act as a large family unit. Colonies of these wyverns often start with a pair of Chirmins that grows the more babies they reproduce and their offspring's later suitors joining the colony. Living in large colonies allows them to scare off potential predators and share food among each other that may otherwise be difficult to catch alone.
Chirminaudir are omnivores, they will consume both plants and meat. When consuming plants, it has been discovered they have a particular interest in sweet-tasting fruit. Meanwhile for hunting, they prefer fish, insects and other soft meats. At first it was discovered Chirminaudir go after smaller monsters and insects for food, but later a shocking discovery showed they will even attack monsters far larger than itself with varied success.
When hunting larger monsters, Chirminaudir were discovered to perform 'dances' where they twirl both in the air and on land while slowly moving closer to the target. While the target is confused, they will lunge and wrap themselves around the monster and attack with quills, claws and teeth.
The first method for hunting smaller prey is using their clappers to stun the prey before pouncing. If smaller prey snaps out of it in time and runs away, Chirmins will slowly chase and allow the monster to exhaust themselves before speeding up and going in for the kill. This moment was first discovered shockingly in the Foreboding Mire, where a Chirminaudir was found successfully hunting a Lagombi by letting it run and slide around the ice until it was too exhausted to escape its attack.
A colony of Chirmins defend themselves using the wing pads called 'clappers'. When the round, flat discs on the tips of their wings are slammed together it creates a large clapping sound. When a group of Chirminaudir clap their wings, it has been noted to sound like rumbling thunder. This stuns the predator long enough for the group to either perform a counterattack or flee.
Chirminaudir find themselves prey to larger monsters as being easy targets due to their limited defense and reliance on group tactics. Even a well-placed thunder attack from a lower ranked monster can have the Charminaudir pulling back.
Researches have noted the species go out of their way to pick fights with Paolumu, though generally Chirmins attack land-based monsters where it is easy to escape in the air should the fight go against their favor. This includes the Beotodus whose ambushing and ability to swim through snow can easily catch a lone Chirminaudir off guard. Fulgur Anjanath are also a threat due to their thunder element and power that can kill a young Chirmin.
Sexual dimorphism:
While featuring different traits, largely the species fight and behave similarly.
Males:
Males of the species feature larger clappers, darker fur/scales and quills on their neck. The pad of their clappers are a darker red.
Females:
Females of the species feature smaller clappers and creamier colored fur/scales and quills on their tail. The pad of their clappers are a pale red/pink. They also feature thicker, white fur on their necks for insulation to warm their young and a pouch to carry their young in when traveling.
Researchers have noted some riders even ride in their female Chirminaudir's pouch, which doesn't appear to bother the wyvern.
