There's an 18th century manuscript by D.A. Freher full of mysterious, symbolic illustrations accompanied by cryptic sayings. One of them is titled "This One is Capable of Both This and That", signifying that our minds are capable of both light and darkness.

This is my interpretation, but using plants as a metaphor. With our thoughts, we can grow something fruitful and beneficial, or something poisonous and full of spikes....
