Description
“Grama, what is that mare doing?” The innocent voice of Laz drew the older mare’s attention away from the scene playing out not far away from them.
Myrtle turned to look down at her grandson, smiling warmly as she always did, “Jessabelle is going to be having her foal very soon.” The young mare had been too nervous to leave the herd to foal after what had happened yesterday.
Damon had discovered a small group of humans in a nearby forest. They had followed him back to the herd, keeping their distance but holding out strange objects. Finn and Damon had to chase the humans off after a while as they kept following the herd as they tried to move away. Since then, the herd had been rather edgy as they feared the humans would return and capture them as well. To make the matter worse, they couldn’t leave the area as they were still waiting on Meadow to return from her foaling.
“A foal like me?” Laz questioned, taking a few steps past his grandmother to try and get a look at the mare. She was partially obstructed by some bushes, but he could see that she was laying down on her side and was close enough to hear her making strange noises. He squealed when Myrtle suddenly gave him a light nip, looking up at her in surprise.
“Yes, a foal like you. You can’t go over there right now, my dear. She needs privacy.” Myrtle moved between the foal and where Jessa was foaling, nudging the colt away.
Lazuli huffed a bit, letting his granddam lead him away from the birthing mare. He had so many questions and he wanted to see the new foal. The other foals were all older than him and he wanted someone to play with that was his own size. “Grama, where does the foal come from? Like, is it in those bushes or the ground?”
Myrtle paused, looking at her grandson for a moment before she burst out in melodic laughter. Some heads turned, looking at the pair curiously before going back to their business. “Oh my little angel, you are so cute.” The grey mare lipped the colt’s short forelock, gaining a disgruntled squeal from him.
Laz made a sour face, though it was clear he was just embarrassed. “Grama! You never answered my question!”
The mare hummed in thought, considering past answers she’d given the other foals growing up. This question was almost like a right of passage, though it seemed to come at any time. “Well, Laz, foals come from their mother’s bellies, just like you did.” Myrtle explained, twisting to nudge her own flank.
The foal made a scrutinizing face, looking at himself and then to her belly. It barely looked like he could have fit, but Myrtle was smaller than his mom so maybe that made sense. “But how does the foal get in there? Do you eat it when it's small and then it grows?” He asked insistently, his curiosity peaked.
“Well…” Myrtle paused, taking a moment to get her story straight before continuing, “when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much, they make a wish on a star for a foal. If it comes true, a foal will start growing in the mommy’s belly until it's big enough to survive.” The mare watched in amusement as the foal’s face went through a range of expressions, from expectant, to confused, to kinda grossed out. She smiled, she loved how innocently curious foals were and almost wished they could remain small forever. Her boys were growing fast, both Jasper and Hartley were almost as tall as their older brother already.
“But.. how does the foal get in there?” Laz retorted, still not satisfied with the answer.
Myrtle chuckled, “Magic, of course.” She could already see the gears turning in his head, and knew the next likely question would be ‘how do they get out’, so she decided to end things before it got there. “I think it's about time you went and played, dear. I have to check on Jessabelle to make sure everything is alright. I’ll go let your mother know you’re over here, so go on now.” She gave his butt a light shove, encouraging him to go.
“I don’t get why I have to go play over here, they didn’t make the bigger foals leave.” The black and white colt grumbled to himself as he tramped through the fresh spring grass, a grumpy look spread across his dark face. He looked back at where his granddam had gone, seeing her speaking to his mother. They both looked over at him before going back to speaking to each other. Looking around the herd, he spotted the older foals sparring and chasing each other around. He’d already tried to join in on their fun, but they always got annoyed because they couldn’t play as rough because he was ‘too little’ and it wasn’t safe.
“It's not fair, I’m not big enough to do anything fun!” Lazuli squealed angrily and bucked and stomped in a fit. He was always being told that he had to wait till he was older or bigger to do things. He’d grown a lot since he took his first steps, yet everyone seemed to think he was still a tiny baby. While Laz worked out his frustrations, a small, shrill squeak of “Watch out!” made him stumble to a stop.
The foal looked around confused, ears swiveling, not finding anyone near him. “Hello?” He asked unsurely, as his parents had told him not to talk to strangers.
“Down here, Stompy!” The voice called out again, this time sounding even closer.
Laz blinked, tilting his head and looking down his nose. Just before his front hooves was a brown ball of fuzz. “What are you?” He asked curiously, lowering his nose down to get a sniff.
“Hey! Do you mind!? Haven’t you heard of personal space?” It squeaked loudly at him, scurrying back a bit.
The foal reeled back a step, pulling his head up and away, “Ah! Sorry!” He watched the little creature skitter for a few moments before it looked up at him again. He’d never seen or heard of something like this, he couldn’t help his curiosity as he asked “Are you some kind of mouse?”
“Me? A mouse? You are joking right, are you telling me you’ve never seen a guinea pig?” The critter asked, sounding wounded by the foal’s ignorance. “Do I look like I have an ugly tail like a mouse?” It turned around, wiggling what amounted to little more than a nub.
Laz made a face, “You don’t look like a pig.”
“That’s because I’m - never mind! Look, kid, I need your help!” The rodent shook its head in frustration.
Laz was surprised, not expecting to be asked for help by the stranger. “You want my help? But aren’t I too small?” He asked, sounding a bit bitter.
“What do you mean, small? You’re huge compared to me! You’re plenty big enough to help free my friend.” The guinea pig shouted.
“Oh.. well…” Laz hesitated, he knew he shouldn’t talk to strangers, but they were small and said they needed help. His parents always told him that it's nice to help others, and they were asking for help so that was okay, right? “I guess I can help, where is your friend?” He asked, looking around for another small rodent-thing.
“Great! I’ll lead you to them, follow me - But watch those big feet of yours!” The guinea pig squeaked as the foal nearly stepped on them again.
The small critter and foal walked a short ways away, just on the other side of a scraggly stand of trees and down a small hill. Laz was nervous as he was out of sight of the herd, but he told himself he would just help them and then go back before his mom even noticed that he was gone. As they got closer, Laz noticed that there were other small animals. One he recognised as a rabbit, but the other was very strange looking. Before he could say anything, the guinea pig that he’d been following called out to the others.
“Hey! I found someone to help!” They called out, drawing the attention of the other animals.
“It’s ‘bout dang time! I can’t hold it up much longer!” The strange, round, tan creature shouted back, peeking over a log.
“Who is this?” The rabbit asked, turning to face the foal with a smile.
“Uhh, hey kid, introduce yourself!” The guinea pig scrambled over its words when they realized they’d never asked.
Laz looked a little surprised, but did as asked, “My name is Lazuli. Umm.. what’s going on? Someone is stuck?” He had been looking everywhere but didn’t see anyone obviously in need of help.
“Over ‘ere, kid!” The odd creature called out to him, pointing at the log with its claws hands.
Laz looked at the claws and hesitated, taking a moment to swallow nervously before stepping closer. They thought maybe they had their tail stuck under the log or something, but as Laz got closer he saw another strange animal huddled almost under the log. It looked all spiky, and he did notice some spikes stuck into the log’s bark. “What is that?” Laz asked curiously.
“Haven’t you ever seen a porcupine?” The rabbit asked, sounding a bit amused.
“Pork-ew-pine?” The foal asked unsurely, what a strange name to say. He said it a few more times, trying to get it to sound right.
“Poor-cue-pine. Porcupine.” The rabbit said helpfully.
“Um, hello? I still need help down here…” A small, childish voice said, drawing the attention of the others.
Laz leaned closer, only to be pushed away gently by the clawed creature, warning him “Watch it, kiddo, else y’ll be gettin’ quills in yur nose.”
It wasn’t much of a jump for Laz to figure out that the quills were the spikes, and just as quickly realized he didn’t want them poking him. “Okay, then what do you want me to do?” he asked, nervous about how long he’d been away and that he wasn’t going to be helpful.
“The log rolled on them, but it's too heavy for us to move so we need someone strong enough to roll it.” The rabbit explained, putting a paw on the log and pushing to show that it was too heavy.
Laz looked at the log, putting a hoof carefully on the branch of it and gently testing it. It wiggled with a bit of pressure, so it seemed like it wouldn’t be so hard, “I think I can do it.”
“Hurry up, my tail hurts!” The little porcupine cried.
Working together with Laz rolling the log towards himself and the clawed creature, which he learned was an Armadillo, pushing from the other side, they managed to roll the surprisingly heavy log off the porcupine’s tail. As soon as it was free, it quickly turned to inspect its tail, noticing more than a couple quills missing and embedded in the bark. “Aww, I just regrew those…” It whined softly.
“Don’t be whining, at least yur free.” The armadillo tutted the younger creature.
“We need to get you back to your mother, I’m sure she’s worried about you” The rabbit said to the porcupine. With that, the rabbit began to lead the porcupine away, both thanking the foal for his help.
“That goes the same for you, Lazuli. In fact I think she’s coming by the sound of those heavy footsteps!” The guinea pig squeaked, moving closer to the log for safety from the big hooves that would squish them.
As if on cue, Lazuli looked up the hill and saw his red and white mother charging towards him with a whinny. “Lazuli! What are you doing out here?!” She asked, the frantic worry evident in her voice. “You know better than to wander off, what if those humans grabbed you and we didn’t know?!” Fancy fretted over her son, checking his whole body for any sign of injury.
“Mom, mom, mom, MOM!” Laz repeatedly called, getting louder until his mother finally stopped and looked at him. “I can explain, I was helping a guinea pig, rabbit, and armadillo get a porcupine out from under a log!” He explained proudly with a smile.
Fancy looked unimpressed and confused, but she looked down at the two creatures he had mentioned as they stood near an old log. “Is this true? Where are the other two, the rabbit and porcupine?” She asked politely, if a bit disbelievingly.
“Ye, it do be da case! Y'all got a good kid thar, strong n’ kind.” The armadillo replied, grunting as it tapped on the log with its claws.
“Ms. Cotton took the lil spiker back home to his mother, as she knew where their nest was.” The guinea pig confirmed.
Fancy looked at her son, looked at the log and the animals around it, and then back to her foal. “That was very kind of you, Laz, you did a good thing today. Next time, please tell someone where you are going so we don’t worry so much.” His mother smiled at him, gently grooming his forelock. “But, you scared us a lot, so please don’t run off like that again.” She lightly scolded. She looked at the other animals, smiling tiredly, “Thank you both for taking care of him, and I’m glad he was able to help all of you.”
"It's not a problem, miss horse, sorry that we dragged him off without letting you know either. Hehe, I probably should have gotten an adult horse instead, but oh well. All's well that ends well.” The guinea pig looked a bit sheepish as they knew they probably should have went about things differently.
The pair of horses soon left the other animals, walking back to the herd. Laz kept his head down, walking quiet but flicking his eyes to his mother as he tried to tell if he was in trouble. Eventually, he decided to ask, “Are you mad, momma?”
Fancy sighed heavily, looking down at her beautiful son, “No, I was just scared. I thought I had lost you, you really worried everyone!” She frowned at him, her disappointment outweighed by her worry. She thought that they’d taught him well, taught him not to wander and not to speak with strangers - yet still he did. It made her frustrated, but also scared. What if he was too trusting and followed a bad horse, or a predator, or a human?
Lazuli slowed down as they came up to the trees, pawing at the dead leaves left over from the previous seasons. “I’m sorry momma…” He said softly, looking up at her with his bright blue eyes. “I just wanted to be helpful, and not be told I was too little to do something.” He said, sounding both frustrated and defeated.
Fancy paused, looking down at her son as her heart went out to him. She hadn’t realized how often he likely had heard that. Being the first foal of the year and having such a big gap between him and the next foal was obviously difficult. Thankfully, he soon would have some new friends to play with. “Oh my darling, I didn’t realize… I’m sorry that you’ve felt that way. We never meant to make you feel like you were useless. You’re just… you’re so special and we don’t want to see you get hurt.” She cooed to him, moving over and hugging him to her chest. She felt him snuggle into her and felt the wetness on her fur as he started to cry.
They stayed like that for a while, a mother comforting her son as he worked through his emotions. After he had cried himself out, she took a step back to look at him, washing his face with her tongue to clean off some stray tears. “Come on, there is someone you’ll want to meet back at the herd. I think you won't be feeling quite so alone anymore soon, my dear.” Fancy said, nuzzling her son again.
Laz perked up, looking up at his mother curiously, “Who is it momma?”
Fancy smiled at him, starting to walk away, “Come and find out!”

I didn't think it through when I decided it would be cute to draw Laz with a bunch of animals to get rid of some events. Had to heavily rely on references to get through it x.x and I ran out of steam when it came to the background.
