Pov - Myling

So close now! The scent was strong, and the wind in their favor. They were on the trail they had lost and found, only to lose it again to the weather. It had taken days to locate it again, but they were sure this time - how couldn't they be, the smell was so strong!

Myling glanced back, seeing just how far ahead of their small herd they'd gotten. Oops, they were barely visible as they navigated the rolling hills. They looked to be trotting trying to catch up, though Ajax was ahead of them. Myling giggled guiltily, but a bark snapped her attention to her companion.

"Myling! We've found the herd!" Sassy barked excitedly, head whipping back and forth between the young mare and what lay just over the hill.

Myling breathed for a moment, her body thrumming with anticipation. They'd been searching for months, crossing nearly the entire valley in their search, and they were finally at the end. Hopefully, she reminded herself, you still need to see to be sure. That was right, of course it was right! Nothing was for sure until she saw them with her own two eyes. Finally breaking from her trance-like state, Myling surged forward, sprinting to the top of the hill. There, she paused as she was not prepared for what she saw.

There were so many horses. Not as many as there were at the Great Lake, but still a comparable amount considering this was just one herd! They'd spread out to graze, yet it was clear to see they were one unit, one single herd. Horses of all different colors and patterns, of various ages and sizes. For a horse like Myling, who had grown up not seeing much of the world, it was so impressive to think that so many horses could be in one herd.

"Do you think it's really them? It sure smells like them." The dog asked, sniffing the air eagerly as she sat patiently. The wind direction had shifted to blow away from them, but this close the smell was still strong.

Myling hummed, cocking her head this way and that. She scanned the herd, searching for individuals that matched the descriptions Ajax had relayed to her. Myling didn’t want to let him down, not now when they were so close. She didn’t want him to suffer any longer than he already had. Ajax needed to be with his family again.

Pov - Damon

Following the barking, Damon caught wind of not only the noisy canine, but also another horse. A mare. His annoyance slowly turned to confusion and curiosity. He didn’t hear any whinnies or cries for help, so he doubted the mare was getting chased by mutt. The feral dogs sometimes decided they wanted to play wolf and chase horses, but they were rarely a threat. Still, the herd had young foals that were easy targets, so he didn’t want them getting too close.

The stallion attempted to avoid skylining as he moved across the hills, staying to the lower sides or going around. He wanted a chance to see what was going on without being noticed first. Though, as he finally spotted the dog, he was surprised to see the mare right beside them.

The stallion's eyes narrowed as he watched, his confusion replaced with suspicion. They were looking at the herd intently, seeming to talk excitedly about them. He couldn't make out the words, but clearly they were in cahoots with one another.

Damon's concerns only grew when they began barking and whinnying in the direction they'd come. Just what are they up to? Who are they calling for? He hissed internally. I don't like this. I have to get rid of them now before - Just as Damon began to stalk up towards the pair, he saw something that froze him to the spot. Or more aptly, someone.

    NO WAY… AJAX?!

Pov - Myling

Myling's dark eyes eagerly roamed over the horses spread out in the near distance. Even from here she could make them out quite clearly. She ran through a mental list of horses Ajax specifically mentioned, focusing on the obvious ones.

A short, stocky mare with a short mane. Dark brown and white with many spots. Perhaps the mare on her right was Naomi?

A small mare with long, curvy, messy, black and white mane. Also dark colored but completely speckled white with larger patches on her sides. A mare fitting Sybill’s description was nursing a light dun foal. Huh, he hadn't mentioned her being pregnant.

This continued on for a few minutes, many horses seeming to fit the descriptions given to her, but still she wasn't one hundred percent sure it was actually Ajax's herd. At least, until a pure white mare she'd skimmed over turned around.

A young white mare with a huge, pinkish burn scar across her barrel. It extended from the back of her shoulder nearly to her flank. This horse was, without a single shred of doubt, Avalon.

"It's them!" Myling sang gleefully, twirling around. She excitedly squealed before letting out a long neigh. The sound was awful and eerie, to those unfamiliar with Myling it was a terrifying noise. It sounded like multiple horses were crying out, their voices strangled and wrapped to fit the mare’s voice.

Sassy was unperturbed by it, instead barking excitedly along with her. Both remained unaware they were being watched only meters away. They were too focused on who was coming to their calls.

In the time that she'd been examining the other horses, their herd had nearly caught up. Upon them giving the signal, they all grew attentive and their pace doubled. Ajax spared a momentary glance behind him to assure the group was coming with him, before he broke into a gallop.

Within mere minutes he was cresting the hill Myling and Sassy stood upon. The stallion grinned at them but quickly turned his attention to the large herd before him. He paused, eyes wide and nostrils flared as he took in the sight before him. Ajax's gaze flicked around the horses, much like Myling's had moments prior.

Ajax’s stillness caused Myling to start doubting her conviction that this was the right herd. Surely it was them, no way could there be so many coincidentally similar looking horses just hanging out in one area together, right? Unless there was something else that had given Ajax pause. Before she could say anything, Ajax let out a whinny of his own before trotting down the hill toward the herd.
