I have a wallet, dagger, and a medallian with the templar red cross on it. all these years and I never found out what that symbol ment.

About the mantling... Looks like they got the idea from what they saw!
Anyway, thanks, because it is wonderful to see what they looked like and not the Hollywood images we usually get!!!

Well the mantling was cloth brough in as a protection against the sun, so the crusades probably had something to do with it, and the twisted band just kept it in place.
