Description

A long time went by without me uploading something here, so here is a special drawing for this day.

Today, September 15, exactly 100 years ago, tanks were used for the first time in combat during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette.

These new machines, created by the British, advanced on that day against the German defended lines hoping to end the stalemate caused by trench warfare tactics, which already had consumed the lives of thousands of young soldiers on both sides.

Although the operation ended in a limited success, even in a failure by some sources, enough potential was shown, allowing General Douglas Haig, the British commander at the time, to order the mass production of these steel giants.

From that point onwards, the evolution of these machines would never stop, making them one of the symbols of what would become the modern war.

From the clunky and crude designs of the First World War, through the experimental and bizarre prototypes of the Interwar Era, the colossal industrialism of the Second World War and the eletronic revolution of the Cold War, tanks still remain relevant today, even 100 years after their first deployment on the battlefield.

To quote David Willey, historian and curator of the Tank Museum of Bovington, Dorset: “We say for good or ill as you may look at a tank in very different ways: as a symbol of liberation, protection, safety, or as an opressor, an invader of your country, a symbol of tyranny. Back in 1916, the tank was an invention that was designed to save British soldiers lives.

A hundred years ago; a hundred years ago, Western nations were a shining example of progress and strong minded people. Now, now, its filled with pussies that complain about not having a safe space from logic.

It's interesting that even though it was the British who first fielded tanks it was a civil engineer from Tasmania, Australia who would design the first tanks that would lead to the development of MK 1.

This is a very interesting piece of information.

I don't recall reading about it when I was researching about the history of tanks.

Even here in Australia, very few people know about this small but important fact of military history. Most books don't have this information, but I've found that tank museums do. It's not uncommon for original military historical records to be hidden from the public eye.

It's a great GuP way of celebrating 100 years of an iconic modern weapon.
