VERY WIP
The pale foal was born into a nomadic northern herd, birthed in a cave dug from the snow. It was Christmas and the out of season foal was considered a blessing to her parents. She was named Yule for the occasion, though she would rarely use this name as an adult.
The first thing she remembers, besides the face of her ma, was staring out the entry of the hollow and seeing the empty hostile landscape. It was nothing but blinding white, and the sight disturbed the foal at first. As Yule grew she would grow to love this barren colorless place.
Just strong and hairy enough to survive the remaining winter Yule grew to see spring, and the colors. As a foal she loved to frolic and play in the summer grasses, as she grew out of playing and wrestling her interest became academic. Why did the plants only come out in spring and summer? Why were only certain plants eaten? What would happen if you ate the wrong plants?
So began the filly’s interest in botany and eventually potion making; In the beginning of her teachings she studied from the herds healer, learning how to dry plants and scavenge kindling for fires. Yule carried a leather bound tome to record all the vegetation she came across and was soon more interested in her book then other living creatures, always painting a new flower she had found or scribbling a new idea for a salve. Even her parents and childhood friends were ignored and forgotten in her quest for knowledge.
On her twelfth birthday her parents revealed their plans to send Yule south to study botany in the greener parts of the world. The young mare was beyond ecstatic, and left barely a week later, the world still deep in winter snow.
Yule did not need many supplies besides the essentials carrying only a new white bearskin cloak, a sword for protection, a small sum of money, a map and now two leather bound books. The journey was not easy, but Yule was determined.
After wandering the south for ten years, moving from teacher to doctor to alchemist Yule decided her education was finished and separated from her last instructor. They separated in a small village, where Yule decided to stay to practice medicine and study the poison frogs in the area.
Only a couple years later the spotted mare was ready for a change of scenery. If it were not for the army that passed through the village Yule’s life would have been very different. The army more than happy to allow the young apothecary to join their ranks; There is no such thing as too many medics.
The war was in its third year, and each country was preparing to take drastic measures. Each side desperate to know their enemies were planning. They needed someone in the enemy trenches, watching and reporting, helping to counter each attack. The search for a spy was on.
They would need someone the enemy soldiers hadn’t seen before. Someone unassuming who wouldn’t raise eyebrows if they suddenly showed up to camp, that could yet get close to the soldiers and learn their strategies. A healer would be perfect for this.
The command asked many horses before coming to Yule, who had mostly become known as a hermit when she was off duty. To the superiors Yule was seen as one of their last resorts; she barely spoke with her own comrades and patients, she may blend in, but would she actually learn anything important?
Yule’s spying ended up turning the tide of the war and she was much celebrated by the few horses that knew of her work. The army even decided to keep her on, using her talents as a spy and apothecary as was needed.
