terrace, glaciers, erosion, noise - that I see
but why is it so good? ) even without normal mapping it sure is
just erosion? )

I have absolutely no idea... it must be the face of Jabba the Hutt you can see in the rocks on the left-hand side...
For me... this work was the start for my world-machine love
Just Erosion? I've been studying erosion for a year now... and I still keep learning... have a look at this if you want... the terrain is so much more complex: [link]

Yep, you build nice canyons. I'm working on large terrain area of something like Arches National Park. But vertical shapes are problematic. Either they slide down too much with Geological time enable, or too static with it disabled and lack detail. Argh.

Vertical shapes always are... tell me about it...
When I create terrains, 1 terrain is usually one small feature, this way you can get more detail out of it... This scene counts about 6 4k terrains. And really small strata help

That's a good idea, yes! As the story goes, thank you a lot, your pictures inspired me a great deal. I mean, you take Battlefiled 3 - and we have just a no-brainer Classic WM+Power erosion here. That's bullshit. ) But your works got me thinking that almost everything I can find in Google Earth, I can do in World Machine, and I already made a good progress.
Keep up your awesome work. )

Thank you... I'll will try to
And if you ever feel like discussing wm2 again, feel free to contact me

Well, I processed several pieces separately, as you advised. Some nice increase of quality. Goes like this at the moment:

Glad you like it... It looks good!
Try to work with several materials and use the distribution maps (from the erosion node)to separate them-> e.g.sand for the deposit/flow, rock for the rest
Other things you could do... Add a second erosion node a e.g. the bottom of the cliffs (select bij height), going for strong full erosion

I used
I'm limited with very small allowed height of cliffy part of terrain. Originally indended to make big canyon, but I'll have my chance later. Actually, three erosions, hell of terrace-combiners, and it is still not quite good for something massive.
As the story goes, just yesterday heard that it's just one guy who created whole WM. Got to be real erosion psycho. )

What do you use to render in? TO get load of detail I create procedural terrains in Vue at 4K then mix them in with the WM2 file... The details in vue are massive...
Yes... the height limit is a bother to me to...
Yup... that's true ... Stephen Schmitt! The guy must be amazing!

Game engine. Short deadlines. )
I plan to look inside this VUE thing, however, some time later.
WM can get some nice results single-handed. Sometimes... ) Got some nice mega-detailed cliff-range, thaaan I decided to make it even better, aaaand no Cntr+Z = bye-bye. )

Yeah... happens quite a lot... can't wait to get my hand on the final releas of 2.3
Had this thing for a while that it crashed each time I tried to save... More good terrains will follow
Good luck on the deadlines

Great pic. I got bored so I took your pic and recolored it into a sunset scene: [link]

Not sure if I wouldnยดt have gone the opposite. A blurred background and a bit sharper p51ยดs

I think it would look better with a little less blur on the bodies of the planes. The blur on the propellers is fine as it is.
Amazing job otherwise!

Thank you for your feedback!
Getting the blur right and realistic was one of the more difficult parts in this image. I worked out several versions, this was the one I liked most.
Perhaps it is indeed a bit over exaggerated, but I felt this was necessary to keep the impression of speed.

No problem! It's a brilliant image =]
I also notice now that the planes don't contrast much with the landscape, which results in them not standing out very well - they seem almost camoflaged, and at a glance our eye could miss them. Just something to keep in mind

just curious, how long does it take to finish a work like this?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Dave-DK In reply to MADMANHales [2011-09-02 08:37:29 +0000 UTC]
The first concept (which basically looks like this, just not as realistic and minus the blur) was done in about 4 hours... (includes creating the terrain)
I spent 2 hours a day afterwards on this image for about 2 weeks.
A lot of this time was spent in getting the lighting precisely as I wanted.
Setting up the materials, etc...
And making loads of test-renders...
I've only been doing this for about 6 months and my library of custom settings is getting bigger every day which, future works will be much faster
I hope this answers your question!
