Description
Under Portugal 2035, the existing twelve C-295's in Portuguese service were rebuilt to C-295W tactical transport standard. The patrol/SAR-configured aircraft were to be replaced by a common maritime aircraft that would also replace the P-3 Orion.
After considering several alternatives, the decision was made to obtain ten C-295W airframes fully configured for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare. These aircraft would be fitted with underwing hardpoints for torpedoes, depth charges or Rbs-15 anti-ship/land attack missiles, with provision for dropping sonobuoys or lifeboats from the rear ramp.
Four AEW-equipped aircraft were also purchased, being used as effective force multipliers. They are capable of radar surveillance of both air and sea, allowing the more capable armed aircraft to be better utilised.
