Description
Obtained from the USAF in 1962, on the understanding that it would never be deployed outside of mainland Portugal, the F-102 was of course used in action in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea. A lack of support from the US meant that the MA-1 radar and AIM-4C Falcon missiles became unserviceable by the end of the decade, leading to OGMA adopting their own upgrade, known locally as the F-102bis.The F-102bis upgrade took the remaining two-seat and all but ten of the single-seat aircraft, stripped out the avionics and added two additional wing stations. The French Cyrano II radar was then fitted, along with four R.530 IR-guided missiles under the wings and a cannon pod with two DEFA-552 30mm guns in the central weapons bay. The outer bays were then used as extra fuel tanks.
The other ten aircraft were fitted with the new radar but only had two missile stations and carried cameras in the weapons bays. They were, naturally, known as the RF-102bis.
The fall of the proto-fascist Estado Novo regime in April 1974 led to a normalisation of relations with other NATO countries, allowing the new government to pursue more modern aircraft. Portuguese Delta Daggers were replaced with the Mirage F1E by 1981.
