Description The centre of any of the "Healyville" estates built to house refugees in war-devastated areas, three or four of these buildings would be erected at the centre of these ersatz villages. Of these, one would be used to contain the gas turbine generators used to provide electrical power and communal heating to the estate; one would form a communal laundry and general store; one would be configured as a multi-use community building (as seen here); while every fourth estate would have a large building configured as a school for the surrounding estates that was also used as a cinema on evenings and weekends.
The multi-purpose building was the focal point of community activities. During the day it was a canteen, similar in scale to the British Restaurants of World War II. On Saturday mornings, some would function as an impromptu synagogue (wherever there was the demand) and on Sunday mornings it was a chapel for practically every Christian denomination. Most of the time, however, it was the village inn and was very much like a 1950s working men's club in style. Drinks served here were locally-produced to government requirements in order to conserve the supply of ingredients and prevent drunkenness in a population suffering the trauma of surviving World War III. Bitter, mild, stout and on occasion lager were produced for distribution to these institutions that had an emphasis on providing refreshing flavours with a maximum alcohol content of 2% abv. Live entertainment was provided most nights in the main hall, but other popular pastimes such as darts and American-style pool were provided in the smaller games room.
