Description
Replacing the Tornado F.5 as the RAF's premier air defence asset from 2009 onwards, the British Aerospace-built version of the F-25A/B was known in service as the Typhoon FGR.1 and T.2 respectively and featured several significant changes from its American cousins.Firstly, the type deleted several carrier-spec pieces of equipment such as folding wings and catapult spurs to save weight and complexity.
Next, the original General Electric F414 engines were replaced with the Eurojet EJ200. This engine was originally developed by Rolls-Royce as the XG.40 technology demonstrator and was intended to power the defunct European Fighter Aircraft. Rolls-Royce thought that the XG.40 had promise as a replacement for the F404 and RB199 compact turbofans, and so continued to develop the concept in partnership with MTU, Fiat and ITP.
Thirdly, the main sensors were replaced with domestic counterparts. The AN/APG-81 active phased array radar was ditched in favour of a Marconi ACR-2000 passive phased array system derived from Blue Vixen; while the internal Lockheed Martin EOTS thermal imager/laser rangefinder was dropped for a similar system (TILDS) developed by Marconi in concert with Leonardo in Italy and Rafael in Israel.
Finally, the British aircraft retained the Mauser BK-27 internal 27mm revolver cannon, while the US models used the 25mm GAU-22 4-barrel rotary gun instead.
Although initially intended for few reasons beyond national chauvinism, the British changes in fact allowed the licence-built aircraft to enter service two years ahead of their American counterparts due to infighting between subcontractors and repeated butting of heads between the Pentagon, Congress, McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed Martin. This allowed the British-assembled aircraft to make several export deals ahead of their cousins from Fort Worth.
Cleared with all the usual RAF fighter-bomber weapons, the Typhoon fleet would be upgraded to Tranche 2 standard in the early 2020s with the addition of uprated engines, new avionics, improved mission computers and clearance of new weapons.
