Description
Replacing the M113, AMX-VCI and MOWAG Grenadier vehicles in service, amongst others, the Argentine variants of China's WZ-551 6x6 armoured vehicle began to enter service in 2005. As of 2023, six variants of the amphibious armoured vehicle are in service. The VN9A "Nahuelito" APC dispensed with the heavier 30mm cannon in favour of a lighter turret featuring a .50-cal Browning M2. It replaced the previously mentioned armoured vehicles in Army service, along with the LVTP-7, LARC-V and Panhard VCR with the Marine Infantry.
The VN9B "Patasola" and VN9C "Gato" were guided missile carriers. VN9B carried HJ-16 anti-armour missiles and replaced both the handful of TOW-2 equipped Humvees and the ageing M1968 recoilless rifle with anti-tank units. VN9C carried launchers for the standard Argentine MANPADS, the Saab RBS 70, and was the first such vehicle in service.
VN5D "Argerich" was an unarmed ambulance variant, with over a hundred in total being brought into service across all four services.
WMA301 "Patagon" was an assault gun variant, carrying the FM K.4 Modelo 1L 105mm tank gun (an Argentine variant of the ubiquitous Royal Ordnance L7). This was intended to replace the Panhard AML-90 and ERC 90 Sagaie in use with the Army and Marines respectively.
Finally, WMA301A "Diablo" used the same hull and a modified turret from the Patagon, to house a domestically-developed 105mm howitzer. Developed from the venerable Oto-Melara Mod 56 howitzer, the M2005 gun used the same range of ammunition but had a longer barrel for improved range. The vehicle was still small and light enough to be carried in Y-9 "Club" transport aircraft.
