We need a word for something that is hideous and gorgeous at the same time.

Well, at least we have one for something that's hideous and cute at the same time. Adhorrible. Okay, I made that one up.

I keep hoping we'll get to see a "Shadow Over Innsmouth" movie one of these decades!

Very cool stuff . I'm just starting to learn Z-brush myself...but have a LONG way to go. I'm trying to make the transition from traditional sculpting to digital. Seems like something all traditional sculptors need to do with where things are going. I'll always do both though. All your stuff is awesome, very cool you worked on the Silent Hill film as well. I worked briefly at MastersFX...but unfortunately that's my only industry experience so far.

Thank you so much. That's very smart, you're doing the right thing, keep at it.
Thank you for the praise.... so when did you work at MastersFX and what did you do there?

Thanks, and you're welcome! You're stuff really is great...I'm a self taught sculptor, so I know how hard it is to get to a higher level with it. It takes such determination, at least it has for me.
I worked at MFX a few years ago, and was let go because they run a small crew...and were running very dry on projects. So the guys who had been there for years kept their jobs, and little ol' nooby me was let go. I was also told I wasn't being assertive enough, which was annoying because I was trying to be HUMBLE, lol. I didn't want to be the annoying new kid throwing my weight around these guys who had worked on some of my fave films I grew up with. And I asked a ton of questions. Either way, I learned my lesson to be more bold, because I'm definitely not timid or shy. I realize that's not the best thing to be honest about? But I feel I was perceived un-clearly, and I learned from it anyway.
While there I worked on the first season of True Blood, just minor work on that one. They did some make up tests on me and I did some precision cutting for tattoo designs. The main thing I did artistic work on was A Haunting in Connecticut which I was credited for. I painted some dead eye pieces for background bodies, then my boss let me paint the hero prosthetic eye pieces. I used a detail brush and an airbrush...mixed with layers of baldies (sp?) for depth. That was my favorite thing I did while there, being trusted with something so important and creative. I also worked on the remake of The Day the Earth Stood still (assisting with life casting and various other random tasks)...and assisted with the film The New Daughter (also credited on the film itself which was neat ). And for a random task, my boss had me design and sculpt some devil horns for the producer of A Haunting in Connecticut for a Halloween party, lol. Aside from that stuff, I did the usual grunt work in between other artistic things. Scrubbing molds, sweeping the floor, etc. Oh yeah, I also made insoles for the feet of the monster suits in the film The New Daughter. I used a combination of foam and wonderflex, forming them over life cast feet.
Currently I'm out of work and just doing some online sales on etsy and such, while trying to learn z-brush. I'd love to get into video game character art/modeling, so I'm even open to doing some QA work just to get me somewhere in game work if I can find it...while I learn. But I know film and toys also use z-brush, so it's good for me to learn all around. I've tried a few times to get into other FX shops but haven't had any luck. If you know of anyone crewing up, or are hiring yourself...please let me know. I'm in socal and willing to commute. Any art related work I can find, traditionally or digitally would be awesome. Tough times for everyone.

That is looking great David! Great textures and deets, especially the placement of the veins. That face is killer too. I agree, the bg looks a bit generic, but still, the figure is the focus right? How's life?

You've really nailed the scaly hide texture/feel. Definitely looks as if it slowly transmogrified from fleshy human skin into this over time.

It does have some Lagoon reference, but most people don't know that Creature from the Black Lagoon was influenced by Lovecraft's story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth".

It's a half human half fish man character from an H.P.Lovecraft story called Shadow Over Innsmouth. It centers around an isolated New England fishing village whom the inhabitants have mutated into amphibious half humans. One of my fav. stories especially since I grew up in New England. One of Del Toros faves as well.
