Very cool!! The motion blurs really add to the awesomeness of the piece.
Since you're still working on the Pilot-era hydrogen collectors (Bussard collectors), would you mind if I put in my two cents, to help you out a bit?
You're on the right track with getting rid of the "spinning lights" and making it all red, but I should also point out that to really give them that "Pilot" look to them, make them much darker. The Pilot era Connie hydrogen collectors weren't backlit, which means they should pretty much just look like inactive lamps.
Hope that helps you, bro!!

Thank you for the infos. I have the caps only a bit of illumination as I think it needs some because of the "sparks" which are created by the hydrogen atoms' collisions.

That's a good point, and I see your reasoning. I just think that making them darker would give it a more authentic look and feel.
But you're the artist, you can make whatever decision you want to!!

Yo
I tried it out with a darker scheme. It looked really bad. You see, in TOS, all thay had was a strong bluish illumination. As I experiment with realistic-looking lighting, it mostly turns out dark (as it's dark in interplanetary space). With less illumination, the Bussards almost blend in with the darkness, the pic just looks horrible. So I keep this semi-light scheme for the Bussards (TOS-R had it too for The Menagerie and Where No Man Has Gone before).

Hmm...I see what you mean. Well, in any case, here's a perfect screenshot of the Pilot Enterprise; maybe it'll be able to inspire you somehow to get something closer to the source material. [link]
