Merry Christmas to you, too. You pretty much captured a sight I often see in my dreams, being an Excelsior fan boy!

Very nice pic of the Enterprise B. Love the colors.

Great shot of the B. The lighting is a bit bright though, you should have made it darker, but still, its another great one Dave. I like how you captured the scene with the "looking up" angle.

Thank you.
I wanted this bright light, symbolising something like birth.

Yeah, I can see what you were going for. Bright light often signifies a bright future. In this case, for the Ent-B. IIRC, she had a long and distinguished carrer.

Awesome. And a big lol at the title! You already know by that which Excelsior class vessel is the star of the piece!

This reminds me. I recently read an IDW Star Trek comic called Crew #1. It was about the original shakedown of the Constitution Class Enterprise, and it too, suffered a crisis that had to be dealt with by an unready skeleton crew, and a captain with one foot out the door.
It strikes me that perhaps Starfleet should rethink the procedures it employs when shaking down its vessels.

Hehe
I always thought that Starfleet is suffering from Federation bureucrats. All other interplanetary powers spend lots of funds for their fleets, except for the Feds...

I guess this is ultimately a testament to Starfleet's personnel; the fact that they can keep the peace and keep the enemy's camped outside the gates from tumbling on in with a fleet of flimsy ships thrown together with the least resources possible by credit counting bureaucrats.

Just think about it, the first designated Starship was the Defiant, two hundred years after the founding of the Federation.

I'm guessing to meant to say "first designated warship."
And you're right.
Surrounded by hungry, ambitious, empire building powers like the Romulans the Klingons,--heck even the Gorn---the UFP should have a greater interest in building vessels other than the posh luxury liners that serve as overbloated limousines for their diplomatic elite. (Cough--galaxyclass--cough)
Thank goodness for Deep Space Nine.

I wanted this one to be widescreen but I couldn't find a background image for it with that resolution/dimensions.

Great pic as always! You know the more I thought about it, Why the Hell would they launch an incomplete starship? It would seem that Lazy Starfleet Officials as well Bad writing Killed Captain Kirk!

It's like when they sent the Hungarian Rapid Corps to fight the Soviets in 1941. You know why they were called "Rapid"? Because they were bike-mounted. They all perished...

Wait, wait; they're building a gigantic non-aerodynamic and ungainly spaceship in SPACE? I thought they were built sitting on the GROUND, held up by thousands of tons of scaffolding so they wouldn't fall over! Somebody needs to get their facts straight!

I still do not like that ring on the engineering hull (either side of the deflector dish). Not only does it screw up the future lineage of Excelsior Class ships on TNG, but serves no practical purpose and just plain looks ugly.

I know this is late, but i agree they are not that attractive. The reason they were added to the engineering section was for the explosion scene where Kirk dies. They did not want to ruin the Excelsior model so that they could still use it on TNG.

psh, they had good enough CG at the time to make it look good. Or they could have just built a model of the hull section, and built a scarred part in that.

yeah i know didnt make much sense but they did this way instead. if im not mistaken i think they ended up destroying it in TNG anyway.

Keiichi-K1 In reply to cortezjr72 [2009-09-02 02:07:52 +0000 UTC]
Well, first time we see any Excelsior wreckage is at the battle of Wolf 359. Though I think this was the opening scene of DS9, not "Best of Both Worlds" (TNG).
Wait.... this was LONG before Generations. There is no way they could have used that as an excuse.

yeah im probably remembering the destruction of the model wrong but i do know the kirk death scene was why it was added. its in one of those official making of books. if i remember which one it is i'll look it up and see if i can find out, but i dont think they gave a reason wh they didnt just CGI it.

Keiichi-K1 In reply to cortezjr72 [2009-09-06 16:29:39 +0000 UTC]
Well, I think the main reason they added all that crap to it was to make it a more advanced looking Excelsior-class, since it was bearing the Enterprise name. What they failed to realize though was, in doing so, it breaks canon. But then... they do that all the time anyway.

Sorry it took so long to reply...I wasnt able to find the book i read it in but i found pretty much the same answer online..."The flares were added for the specific purpose of damaging them during the Nexus escape sequence and as a way to keep the Excelsior model beneath undamaged. The modifications were also by request of producer Rick Berman, who felt the Excelsior design had been overused in the previous motion pictures and in the television series. The NCC-1701-B was also rendered as a CGI model for certain sequences within the Nexus. As it turned out, the glue used to attach the additional parts did in fact damage the original model, so the modifications were never removed"...Well ther you go, but youre right canon is not something they hold dear. One of the things we have to learn love about Star Trek

I think it adds some retro style to it, like the hulls of the bi-planes.

Well still, there are much better ways to show a unique and advanced ship than adding things to the hull which are obviously not there 80 years later in TNG era.
