Description Say what you will about the heavily prolonged and controversially expensive overhaul, but the iconic LNER A3 pacific 4472 Flying Scotsman is back in steam at long last!

The 1920's built icon of 21st Century engineering is seen here pulling away from Bury South Signalbox on the East Lancashire Railway, while the National Railway Museum owned locomotive was working a series of special trains between Rawtenstall, Bury and Heywood, and vice versa. Thank God the British National Railroad Museum guys put up with her overhaul lasting that long. I teared up looking at her.

Heavily prolonged and controversially expensive at times, but the overhaul got there in the end.

I don't understand how she could've taken that long to be put together.Β  Yes she was in a state where she was inaΒ  trashy mechanical state but still.Β  Was it like that since 1979?

Welcome back Flying Scotsman! You never looked better!

She's finally back. It's a shame Alan pegler never lived to see his engine steam again before sadly passing back in 2012. May he rest peacefully.

Amen to that; if it wasn't for him, the iconic locomotive (and not forgetting the Ffestiniog Railway as well) would have been lost.

I thought the Flying Scotsman was bright green. Still in primer???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaveOnTheRails In reply to VinnyMartello [2016-05-18 12:41:49 +0000 UTC]

The initial plan, after her overhaul, was to have her run briefly in plain LNER 'Wartime' black (which she did for a few weeks after the overhaul was completed) before going into British Railways condition as 60103. Whilst the 'LNER' apple green livery might appeal to some of the general public who know her so well, there are also those who remember her in British Railways days...

I don't know if I ever saw the Flying Scotsman in its heyday as my train-spotting was mostly on the London Midland (and occasionally Eastern region) but nice picture. I am glad the engine is alive and well.

I remember seeing this stunning and extremely famous engine hauling a loaded train past my local crossing with no help.. Just pouring smoke and steam and looking and sounding magnificent..
While its GREAT to see her back (and I know she is going to undergo a re-paint soon) it is a small shame to see that for most of all her nationwide trips she is being pushed by the other vintage (it must be said) diesel engine..
As I said, please don't think I am bemoaning it, I have longed for this day AND I think the Government should have chipped in as well.. But we won't go there..
Just soak it up..
Thanks and I will go see her at Peterborough as she will be going through at least 7 times I gather..

(By the way, anyone know times of arrival at stations on route?)
Rob

The diesel was only assisting that day, because 4472 was still having trouble with her braking system; apparently the compressor was playing up. Hopefully it will all be ironed out before she goes back mainline...

Thanks for the info mate, I was going on the National Railway Museum listings.. They all say (so far), most journeys will be as your shot apart from the last section..
Smaller trips (there are a few) a solo.. Some are already sold out.. Surprise there NOT!

Here she is in steam at last! May it stay that way! When I study in Germany, I'm returning to Britain to see her!Β

DaveOnTheRails In reply to SteamRailwayCompany [2016-01-12 11:01:28 +0000 UTC]

By the time you do, she'll be in green again. But not the kind of green you'd normally expect of 4472!

SteamRailwayCompany In reply to DaveOnTheRails [2016-01-12 22:18:49 +0000 UTC]

You mean BR Brunswick! I could care less of her paintwork considering how disgracefully long it took to get her back in steam! I can go blinkers or without, apple green or wartime black! Just steam her!Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaveOnTheRails In reply to SteamRailwayCompany [2016-01-12 22:53:07 +0000 UTC]

Of course I was referring to BR green... You have a point though about the black colour, but it's going to disappear shortly anyway.

Thanks for the comment!

I like that it's running again, but it really bothers me that they've renumbered the engine and painted it differently than before.

DaveOnTheRails In reply to AntiqueEngineer [2016-01-11 23:57:05 +0000 UTC]

Whilst I like her as LNER 4472, it would be nice occasionally, to see her in a different colour from a certain time period; personally, I've yet to see her in British Railways condition as 60103, but I take your point on board...

Thank you for commenting anyway!

It's a pleasure, sir.

No, in my opinion I liked it better as Flying Scotsman in its green paint scheme and without those smoke deflectors.
