They're using the hard round brush and the soft round brush. Those are the most default of default brushes you can possibly use. They say it in the tutorial itself even.

The end effect looks really good! I've seen quite a few tuts and this approach looks fresh, at least it's new to me. It looks like explained it well, though I'd have to try it myself to understand why you used white on overlay in that part about the set up light.
