Description Bryce5 with gamma correction in PSP7. Maybe it isn't abstract, dunno. Anyway I found these cool optical illusions where everything seems to move in a slightly disturbing way and decided to see if I could make one in Bryce - this is my attempt.

Not only do the spheres rotate, but you can do another cool thing with this illusion! Try crossing your eyes then focusing on the center circle of any sphere. Now everything looks black & white, with no blue or yellow! Very cool!

Interesting observation, unfortunately (as with certain types of stereo images) crossing my eyes does not work for me, but it will be interesting to see if anyone else finds the same. Β Cheers!Β

if i try i can make them all stop moving if not only one stops moving and the rest spin and it makes me want to focus on the spining ones which drive my eyes in circles...

Interesting trick. You notice more movement if you focus on one spot than looking at it all as a whole.

This is a very simple one but I find it quite compelling in that it is nearly impossible to convince yourself you are not seeing black spots. [link]

Lol, I don't nees to press that link, already was it!
My favorite ones are the ones that are 2 or more pictures in one, the ones where you stare at a black and white picture for a while and then look at a blank wall and see a well detailed picture, ones that are impossible shades, and my very most favorite; the ones that are a picture of a triangle with a sentence in it but you can never find the mistake. like the one at this [link]

Maybe the word tryangle ones don't work as well for me because I'm dyslecsic... I'd say I'd try it out on my friends but nearly all of them are dyslecsic too - I wonder if that is common among engineers and people who work in IT? Have you seen the old black and white adverts, there were some in the US used to advertise a breckfast cerial, where the flicker rate was used to create the illuion of colours on black and white television sets? Very odd... No doubt somewere on the internet there will be an explination.

leviathan-ice-dragon In reply to davidbrinnen [2006-03-01 20:24:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh, well then you should get it right away because people who asume they are good at reading will skip right over the second "the". Like did you know that you don't have to write a word correctly for someone to understand it? Yeah! As long as the first and last letters are in the right place, you can mix up the middle ones in any order and you can still identify the word. It's like magic! Someone wrote a whole paragraph with it at a blog and I could still understand it!
But no, I haven't seen those comercials ):

Isn't it moving? I mean the pattern is moving, even if the pixels that make it up are not, it's something to set you thinking about how our biological machinery affects and to some extent dictates what we see "out there" in the real world.

It doesn't work for everyone - my cousin is colour blind, it won't work for him. Curiously it even works to some degree in black and white... How weird is that. This is one of the best combination of colours, you just need to get the scale and the sequence right and off it goes... wheee...! Good job I have broadband otherwise it would take me a whole week to read your comments!

Yes, thank you yes, feel that guilt... not that I have anything better to do. Well Dan thinks so, he was trying to persuade me to go out on a double date with him, but I don't wish to be drawn into his sordid social circle. I don't like being placed in a position where I have to lie - or do I? No I don't like it but I am good at it, so there's an element of satisfaction nevertheless...

Zethara In reply to davidbrinnen [2005-08-08 19:39:02 +0000 UTC]

You're good at lying? Hmmm......

Well...yes there is the matter of the circle..lol and what if your date really has designs on Dan...not that--never mind..anyway, I'm sure other friends would say "Oh go, gooo, it'll be good for you to get out!" I'll just say... Do what you want to do. ...wanders off to another comment, which seems like a good thing to do...

I'm a writer arn't I? What is storytelling but a very extended form of lying... thing is I have no memory so in a sense I'm very bad at lying because you need a good memory for that. But I can do the "acting" bit if you see what I mean. No... you don't know what it is like around here, going out - yik - this is a very backwards hinterland sort of area. It's just depressing. I'm sure they all do have designs on Dan, he can't help it, his charisma is out of controll! It would be a bad idea all round, I'm old enough to know that now, which is why I'm here up until the point where Chris and I walk the dog.

Zethara In reply to davidbrinnen [2005-08-08 20:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Mmm..ok yes I suppose that makes sense. I don't "act" very well most of the time..If I'm in one mood, that's the one you will see...It is very taxing on me to put up a "front." So...your big social event of the night is to walk the dog. Woohoo! (Like I have any room to talk lol)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davidbrinnen In reply to Zethara [2005-08-08 22:51:30 +0000 UTC]

No, no that's not the big social event of the night - that's the big social event of the week! Possibly the month. I don't do "social" except under duress. I don't feel comfortable with other people particularly strangers in a social sense. I guess I'm just difficult like that. I do occasionally give talks to one of the local technical groups at the Eagle hotel on different subjects, like stuff about how the brain processes different types of frequency based stimulous and interprets that as say, colour or sound or pain - vaguely scientific stuff, at least until pint number three and then it goes to pieces somewhat. You know... but that's different from being social.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zethara In reply to davidbrinnen [2005-08-08 22:55:38 +0000 UTC]

You only walk the dog once a WEEK?????????????? That poor dog!!! I think we already had a discussion about social discomfort at some point, because I was aware that you are uncomfortable in a social setting.

I might, but Spikes gets other walkes with other folk, so he's not so badly off. Still he doesn't get enough, but what dog can? Yeah... maybe, we going around in circles again?

Thanks, it doesn't work for everyone you know, my cousin is colour blind and to him it is just a pattern. Cheers for the favorite -if you fancy having a go at this effect yourself, all you need do is get the colour sequence right and the spaceing - it's all very strange...

very optically unnerving~~~my eyes are spiralling and although my eyes have moved on my mind is still being rolled into the spinning scenes~~~~

in the electric kool-aid acid tests ken kesey speaks of our senses being 1/30 of a second behind our minds ability to physically relate to the sensation~~~

so yes in very many ways now is past~~~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

davidbrinnen In reply to an-xperience [2005-01-31 08:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes, now it's been a while so I can't remember what I have said on this subject or not - but if you type optical illusion into google images and follow the rotaty images you will eventually track down an artist who has made this particualr brand of illusion the focus of his work. Be warned, you may come away with a headache. Haveing read a bit on the subject of perception you begin to get the impression that we hardly ever "see" anything, but just lable stuff in a rough and ready sort of way and get on with life. And these illusions kind of support that view, because they clearly demonstrate that the impression that forms in your mind is not the same as the image on the paper. One moves - one is static. Curious. Glad you enjoyed it - if that is the right word?
