Description While I was chatting with ~PorygonV on IM (you can find that chat over at my Haggle Book [link] ) I got the suggestion that someone let Johnny be a Mascot to a baseball team or a convention center. That got me thinking back to my favorite baseball team, which does surprise some:

St. Louis is pretty much "Cardinals Nation" (In fact, I had a youth pastor I flat out traumatized because he dared to be a Cubs fan.) but if I had a choice, I'd go for a lower tiered team, the Gateway Grizzles. [link] I prefer this team over the Cardinals because the prices are considerably cheaper and the ball park has a lot more character than the new Bush Stadium. The cheap seats in the Home Run territory is replaced by a lawn kids can roll around in. And at the end of the first base line? There's a Hot Tub! Oh yeah, that's Izzy, their mascot, in the photo above.

I have other photos taken from my phone in two of the games I went to. You can find it on the Johnny Briz Gallery: [link]

I was thinking that, in the town the comic strip takes place in, they invited Johnny to be the mascot of a local baseball team, which park doubles as a convention center of some kind. It would be Johnny's first gig and he'll be more than happy to scamper around there. Lots of room and obstacles to Parkour over.

And that ran into a problem I didn't have the need to answer until now: 1) What on earth is the city they're in, and 2) What would be the name of the team?! I don't know if I could keep it in the Central Florida area, unless nobody minds a future Johnny Briz/Scarlet PI crossover, and I'm sure as hell ain't going to set this in St. Louis!

It's open for suggestions, people.

BTW: This is the first time I'm using the beta submission page. Outside of it using sta.sh, it's kinda okay. I'll withhold my judgement until all the bugs are taken out.

I figured starting in the minor leagues was implied; after all, don't we all start there in our careers?

A thought comes to mind. Do colonies of mice actually give human names to their kind? I was flipping through the initial chapters and wondered why Johnny would have a human name prior to interacting with actual humans. I know Drew will tell me I'm "thinking too much into this", but it might need to be addressed. I could see Amber naming him for the contest, as part of how the city wants a mascot. If the town has a name like Briston or Bristleton or something, she could name him Johnny Briz as some sort of homage to their hometown.

In consideration for where the city is located, there are a few options you can consider: One is like the Simpsons, where the town is in the USA but unspecified as to where; the other is like Family Guy, where the town is a fictional place in a real state.

As for the team name? I'm bad with these. I guess something rodent related would be best.

For mixing it with SPI, the only thing I could suggest is if you want to do that, do it carefully. I have no idea what Scarlet would be doing here (working Security detail?) but it shouldn't change up her canon story.

A Minor League team would work, as well as the city being named Briston, of an undisclosed state in the union. Anyone in town who knows Johnny by now would think of him as a shoe-in as the town's spokes-rodent. (As for how he got his name, I don't know if you were aware of it, or I haven't settled on the pilot script yet: The Colony somehow got access to electricity and figured out how to get online--not too far fetched seeing how intelligent they've become. Unfortunately, that means that most of the current member's experiences with humans are either by their rare forays into civilization or through the tubes.)

As for the team's name? I'm thinking something cat-ish, or related to cheese, or have Briston be a river city and the team be called the "River Rats," or something like that.

I'll probably nix any SPI-Johnny Briz crossovers at this time, though. I think that idea just bounced off the wall, so to speak.

Okay, I'm going to need some clarification in regards to the world in which the story takes place: are all the rodents (and some other animals) in this world anthropomorphic, but just proper size? Do they all wear clothes and Mickey Mouse gloves or are they essentially cutesy, talking animals, scurrying about on all fours?

I suppose it would make sense if that were true, given the desire to have them living with electricity and the Internet, or to be tiny little ninjas from the north. If they're supposed to be common mice, I could safely say that mice really don't have much use for electricity, the internet or ninjutsu.

I guess that slow realization is just me getting old. Haven't watched a lot of cartoons in years.

Oh Yeah, I should've clarified that, but yes. The descendents of both ratsperiments in both colonies experienced a rapid version of their own Ascent of Man, turning them anthropomorphic, while the mice that haven't done so retained their all fours physicality. Of course, they don't wear gloves but they do wear some clothes, although more simple shirts and trousers, usually used for modesty stake (They must've realized that it wouldn't be prudent to be nudists all the time.)

That's one mystery solved.

It's probably for the best stories remain in their own separate canons. We need not tread old ground, and not everything you make needs to be a part of the same universe. Good decision.

The nice part about fictional towns is that you need not worry about things like regional climates, accents or politics. The 'Briston River Rats' works for a one off plot point, maybe an occasional reference on the radio or on TV periodically; Big cities love their sports.

True enough. And some of the local news shows would have a "Johnny Watch"
