Description
Balao-class submarine USS Becuna (SS-319) served the US Navy from 1944-1969. She served in the Pacific and earned 4 battle stars in World War II. Looking at her, she does not look like a World War II submarine due to a 1950s modernization that replaced her sail and removed her deck guns. To see a wartime configuration Balao-class I recommend the Pearl Harbor Avenger, USS Bowfin (SS-287) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Today Becuna is moored alongside Spanish-American War & World War I veteran protected cruiser USS Olympia (C-6).Protected cruiser USS Olympia (C-6) was built in 1895 and served until 1922. The high point of her career came in 1898 when the then-modern cruiser was Admiral Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay.Β One of her last duties was returning the body of the United States' Unknown Soldier in 1921. Today she is part of Independence Seaport in Philadelphia and in dire need of a drydocking which they cannot afford. Olympia has not been drydocked in 70 years and may eventually sink in place if nothing is done. When I visited only two decks were open because the weather deck and superstructure where closed for renovations.

Two very proud ships each one served inΒ two different wars. The Olympia, the Battle of Manila Bay and WW1, and the Becuna WW2 and the Cold war.
