It's a spiritual thing. The great Torii represents the boundary between the spirit and the human worlds.

Brings back nice memories of a couple of visits there -- unfortunately during my most recent visit the torii was covered in scaffolding and I couldn't photograph it!

Oh, when was that? I would have taken this photo in May 2011. I only stayed in Hiroshima one night, and it turned out that I caught the perfect day for the photograph.

I was there in June 2012 when it was covered in scaffolding. I believe the torii had suffered some damage in a spring storm and they decided they had to do some significant repairs to it. We don't seem to have the best luck with the timing of major repair projects -- on our first visit to the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, many years ago, we found it covered with green scaffolding!

I was hurt enough to visit Himeji-jo when it was actually covered by a black veil while they did restorations ...
It does seem that Japan are fanatical about preserving and restoring cultural sites. It's both a fantastic and enormous deed, costing their government an incredible amount of money.

Ah yes, I heard about the project that was planned there. Mercifully, we had a chance to visit Himeji-jo several years ago when the view was unobstructed, and it was indeed very impressive!

Yeah. If I remember correctly, it was a 2 year project. Anyway, at least I got to see plenty of other Japanese castles, but I hear tell that that one is particularly spectacular.

Yes, definitely worth a visit if you go back to that part of the world!

This looks beautiful! I love how bright the gate looks verses the dark background.
