Stupid observations.. I thought Hulk and Colossus were both right-handed!.. And why doesn't Wolverines biceps grow hair?..

Bicep hair is what he does best... and all superheroes are... ambidextrous... yeah... that's it.

Amazing work!!! Colossus looks the most bad-ass out of the three.

My Advanced Critique: Wolvy's head looks kinda big, and the angle of his left fist looks off to me. Kinda weird to have so similarly posed as the Hulk's fist too. I'm also having a hard time figuring out exactly where Colossus is supposed to be in the shot. Looks like he's supposed to be closer to us than the other two, but it also looks like his right shoulder is pressed on the Hulk's chin.

davidyardin In reply to RussMcLane [2008-12-23 07:09:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again.

Yeah Colossus turned out better in this take. I actually redrew the cover, and kind of screwed up the distances between the characters, and the Hulk didn't turn out to good in this version either.

Great lines on this one - per usual for you it seems, lately you've been rockin' hardcore. The Skarr cover was amazing before and after colors. This one, They really didn't make the wisest choice on a colorist I think, really dulled down the energy you put into the composition and detailing etc etc...
Curious how much say you guys have in who teams up with you on such projects... Lines inks colors etc's etc's....?

davidyardin In reply to WadeFurlong [2008-10-21 10:04:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Wade.

I kind of answered this in a reply above, but I didn't have a choice in who the colourist was here. This one also needed to get done quickly, so there wasn't time to make suggestions anyway.

I usually don't get asked who colours my work, sometimes I don't even know until the book has been published. I still don't know who coloured this piece.

With inkers I have more of a say in who inks my work, but final approval is always with the editor.

No doubt my! Yoy deserve every bit of recognition and respect for the sharp work you putting into you job and the passion of the craft. If only more comic book artists did the same it would strive even more.

I do like that you are inking more of your work as well. I'm sorry to hear that an artist such as yourself doesn't have more liberty of choice on who they collaborate with on projects, hopefully something that changes sooner than later in the business. None the less it's working well enough I think.

None the less I wish you the best on all your endeavors, life, family, and carreer. I look forward to seeing the progression of your work and stunning drawings. Always, best to you David!*

It's not absolute that you get no say. There are a few different deciding factors for selection of creative teams.

If you're a newbie, you generally get less say. As you start to make more of a name for yourself they start to ask you who you want to ink your work, and later if you have a preference for colourist. Obviously the Editor has final say, but the top writers/pencillers have a large say in the creative team.

Another factor in choosing creative teams is if they have exclusive talent who (contractually) need a certain amount of work thrown their way. The editors are obliged to keep them busy. You'll also find editors have a stable of regular inkers and colourists who have worked with them in the past, and they like to keep throwing work to.

The other important factor assembling a creative team is individual work schedules and deadlines. If they need something coloured tomorrow they will throw it to whoever is available.

I was asked on my Ms. Marvel covers if I had a colourist in mind and I asked for Rain Beredo. On another cover run I'm doing they had a colourist in mind, but asked my input too. So I am getting some say, sometimes.
