Histórico: Filha de Cronos e Réia, Deusa da terra cultivada, das colheitas e das estações do ano. Com Zeus, seu irmão, ela teve uma filha, Persefóne, que foi raptada e se tornou esposa de Hades. Seu desespero pela perda da filha tem ligação direta com as estações da Terra. Ficou estabelecido que Perséfone passaria um período do ano com a mãe e outro com Hades. O primeiro período corresponde à primavera e o segundo é o da semeadura de outono, quando os grãos são enterrados. O inverno se dá por causa da tristeza e ira de Deméter.

History: Daughter of Cronus and Rhea, Goddess of cultivated land, crops and seasons. With Zeus, her brother, she had a daughter, Persephone, who was kidnapped and became the wife of Hades. His desperation for the loss of his daughter is directly connected with the seasons of the earth. It was established that Persephone would spend a period of the year with her mother and another with Hades. The first period corresponds to spring and the second is that of autumn sowing, when the grains are buried. Winter is due to the sadness and wrath of Demeter.
