Description I haven't had much time lately to work in my Clashing Worlds worldbuilding project (I've been very busy at work), so after seeing the new How to train your Dragon 3 trailers I started doing a random dragon drawing. It was about the first drawing that I made without sketching it in paper first and I did it in only 3 hours and without using any more than 3 layers (sloth...) and it came out really nice. But then my computer crashed I hadn't saved it and I lost it... (applause!).

Then I resolved to make another dragon drawing, but as I'm no very inspired lately, I came up with making all the species of dragons in the Harry Potter series but in the HTTYD style. I don't know if i will make it to all the species but at the moment I've made one.

This is the common welsh green, a common dragon species found in wales and which is green. It has nothing special in the descriptions that I've found but that it is a dragon that sings (I suppose that males sing in order to seduce hot and much bigger dragon girls), so I made him a pretty large vocal sac.

Let's see if I have what it takes to make all nine species of dragons. Also with this one I made some kind of background/landscape thing which I don't promise doing with the other drawings!

Tell me what you think of it!

UPDATE: Following the always helpful advise from Camelpardia (www.deviantart.com/camelpardia… ) I changed a bit the background colouring and the grass to make the dragon stand out more!

I certainly want to see the Hungarian Horntail and Ukrainian Ironbelly done in this style. That would be so cool.

The scale patterns on this dragon are really beautifully done! Also, I adore the style it's in - very much like the How to train your Dragon style!

This is really good! I like the combination of Harry Potters dragons in How to Train Your Dragon's style, it's a really good mix.

But I do have some tips on making your character stand out from the background, and how to push things further away or closer.
One way of doing this is using different levels of saturation on the back and foreground. It's more common for artists to put highly saturated objects in the background and less saturated objects in the background.
Another trick is to use the color of the objects that's furthest away and putting it on objects you wish to be further away from the foreground. In this picture it's the sky, so putting a bit of sky color in the hills, is a good way to make them appear as if they're further away. Things that you want out of focus can be blurred, human eyes have a tendency to focus on sharper objects and disregard more blurry ones.
Minituts2
1. Original
2. Desaturated background
3. More desaturated hills
4. Blurred hills+clouds and a lot of sky color in the hills. I used gaussian blur here, it's my personal favorite.
I don't know if the program you're using has access to blur options, but if it doesn't it's no big deal, using saturation and color is the most efficient way anyway.

Here's another thing, I figure you've been using a "grass brush" for the grass. They're excellent tools, but there's a trick to using them. You see, currently the grass looks stiff and mass produced, but if you take another pass at the grass and add small handmade details you can make it come alive. For example bending some blades to the right or left, shortening some blades and heightening others.
I like the shadow on the grass though, it's a nice touch and gives the dragon more of a presence within the picture.

Hey, thanks for the tips! I tried to do some of the things you told me. Yet I haven't found any tools to blurr the mountains and clouds in MyPaint. What I did is to make some details in the grass to make it look more natural-looking!

Thanks  again for all your advice, you're always really helpful!

Tell me what you think about how it looks with all the changes!
