Kick-Ass 3 Issue 1 ReviewNB Contains spoilers for those who haven’t read Kick-Ass2 or seen the Kick-Ass2 movie yet.
Always a welcome return into this world of real life superheroes, this first issue of Volume 3 already feels likes it is back on the right tracks after a couple of darker and perhaps unnecessary moments during Kick-Ass 2. However, that is not to say everything is on the bright side as we deal with the fall out of the events from the dramatic end of the last volume, with Mindy left wearing a straight jacket in jail, whilst Dave leads the remnants of Justice Forever. Nice to see the story laid out as Dave has now graduated from High School and sharing an apartment with Marty, both of them are juggling jobs at a fast food outlet and a comic shop by day, and suiting up at night; whilst you can’t help but feel for poor Mindy, locked in her cell as Dave and his crew make a hilarious and unsuccessful attempt to bust her out of prison.
The blood and guts are kept to a minimum this issue, but I am sure we will see more of this in future issues and I like the way that Mark Millar has left little teases and titbits throughout (possibly red herrings) as pointers to future issues. It seems pretty obvious that Dave is going to be betrayed by at least one member of Justice Forever, the obvious hint being at new member The Juicer, but I’ve got a sneaky feeling it could be Dr Gravity or even Harvard University attending Marty AKA Battle-Guy.
I’m pleased to see a lot of humour in this issue, from Todd’s wrongly spelt ‘business cards, to Dave’s Bruce Wayne poses at his parent’s graves. Interesting to see that Dave is shown with some more character development, his training with Hit-Girl appearing to have paid dividends as he confidently abseils down an apartment block and crashes through the window or hilariously perches himself on a pool table during an interrogation scene! Great final splash page as Dave gets himself into a sticky situation and without Mindy to assist, it will be interesting to see how he puts his fighting skills to good use next issue.
No sign of Chris AKA The Motherf*cker yet, but I am sure he will be back soon, together with the rumoured new antagonist and the return of Hit-Girl. On that subject, my only criticism is with John Romita Jr’s drawing of Mindy, that head of hers is wider than her body in her panels, making her look like she is 5 years old. Come on John, she needs to be drawn to the correct proportions, after all this is a real life series, and the characters should age.
More than happy to award this issue 4 stars out of 5, dark humour, realism, great characters, little emotional frames, and laugh out loud moments (spend any of this money on comic books and I will nail your testicles to the floor!). A great set up issue which is Mark’s speciality, I really hope he finishes on a high and gives these iconic characters the ending they deserve. This issue was great fun and a solid set up; I am stoked for Issue 2.
As Dave says in one speech bubble: “I kinda need Kick-Ass more than ever these days”. Welcome back Kick-Ass and Company.
