I love the focus of this shot, however, like the others have said, the weighting of the image isn't quite right, and another thing that would have improved this shot drastically was if you had used the rule of thirds for your composition otherwise, good start!

in terms of the gestalt principles, the rule of thirds, is where you divide your frame up into thirds, in most cameras now days they give you the option to show the rule of thirds grids over your image, basically how they work, is that when composing your shot, lets say we are doing a landscape shot. You need to weight your image, so that either the land takes up 2/3rds of the frame and the sky takes up 1/3rd in a horizontal fashion. Or vise versa.
This is what the grid should look like [link]
And heres a better explanation in case i wasnt too clear: [link]
hope this helps

I have seen that grid before on pretty much every camera i've ever used lol
You just have to change your display settings.

Well if you had put the seashell a but to the side, not in the middle, and come a bit closer, the picture would look so much better. As we see stuff with two eyes, if you put stuff to the side, one of our eyes focuses on the object, the other on the background. That way the effect is better. One other thing, while you wanned to capture the background as a landscape and the object as an object in focus, you should have had closed the aperture alot, so you can get the most of the background less blurry.

I would have gone closer, however it wouldn't focus.
I can't remember how decent the camera was, but I'm pretty sure I would have gone closer if I was able to.
Oh well I took this years ago.
Planning on learning how to use my new camera really well (Once I finally get it)
I'll post all the pictures I take with it and ask for more critiques on those photos.
Thank you for the advice though.
I am still learning, so the more advice and ideas I get, the better.

I like this. I think the main thing that holds it back is because the subject is quite centered, the eye finds off center objects more appealing. If I was you, I would have been closer to the shell, and included more space above it.

That's a good point.
In other words, there's too much rock lol.
Makes sense.
I could of even taken it on more of an angle, and have the shell maybe.. more in the corner of the photo? possibly?
